Got 4" drone?

Hey, I had my 02 in his shop a couple months ago and I couldn't be happier with the performance and sound of the 4" system! I work at a Dodge Dealership and pay CLOSE attention to every modified Dodge that cummins on the lot..... Even the Diesel Mechanic was hugely impressed with Rips system! One side Note: You can't get a FULL appreciation for the "Big Rig" throaty sound from inside the cab, but it's there! (I also have a turn down on the end of the exhaust that is directed back from the truck too)

When I first showed the diesel mechanic the system he asked me to stand on it and drive across the lot so he could hear it. The garage bays were behind me (the doors were open), and I had my windows down. WOW!:D Finally I had the sound I wanted! He said it's the best big rig sounding exhaust he had heard yet, short of taking the muffler off! I'm very happy. I was considering no muffler, but Rip said it would drone and might drive me nuts. Keep in mind my truck sounds perfect without a load! Imagine with 10K behind it! Next stop, Rip's garage for the Edge System!

Thanks for a quality install and personable visit!

2002 Dodge Quad 4x4 l/b, auto, Rip Rooks Exhaust! (more to be added for sure!):D

its a good exhaust, i just don't care for the 90 degree bends in the back. , i believe it has two or three of them. Stan's exhaust doesn't bend more than 45 degrees. On a side note Rip is a great guy and have heard many people talk highly of him.

Personally, the reason I DIDN'T opt for the Stan's Headers exhaust system was because I absolutely hated the tailpipe joint near the top of the axle clearance, "half loop" (VERY close to a radius) . You can see it when it's installed and makes the entire system look REAL CHEAP (IMO). Anyway, I would also like to point out that I have been a long time Stan's customer... heck, I was one of his very first customers when he opened his shop in Auburn, WA.

I've been happy with Rip's system. I opted for the shorty. It's too noisy for the wife. Need to find the time to get back down to Rip's to extend it out back.

Oh and...

I have a Banks/MagnaFlow hybrid (ALL stainless steel... including the clamps) exhaust system which Rip and I modified at a BOMB party at his shop in July.

Good dude that Rip fellow! ( :D )

I'm curious...

Read awhile back that Rip had a Stainless setup sittin on the shelf. Did he get into the Stainless market or was that just a "experimental" system.

Not ALL of Rips customers are happy, myself being one of them. If you intend to do something other than a stock truck, go else where. Also his exhaust system are thin compared to some of the others, so check around first. I am in the market for a 4" exhaust for my 2001, and after my experience with his system on my Crew Cab, he will not get my business again.

Kyle, didn't you have a problem with Stan's too?

Sorry Robert, I was not referring to Banks, I should have been more specific. Banks has come a long way in the last year in the customer service department. There are others out there like Stans Headers that will leave you hanging and not take care of the customer(speaking as one of Stan's FORMER customers)

Stan's also had problems( tail pipe was bent wrong ), but the quality of the materials was better and it has some documentation with it.

As for Rips exhaust I spent extra hours and chasing parts to installing his exhaust due to the fact that his exhaust is too short if you don't use his down pipe, which is a fact that you don't want to find out on a Friday night during the install. Also the each one of the pipe flanges varied from 3 to 6 inches in length, so there is no standard . I had to buy another pipe, and I found out about the difference in the pipe's wall thickness. The 16 gauge pipe I bought locally was visibly thicker than Rips' 16 gauge and would not fit into ANY of Rips flanges. I tried to settle things with Rip, but after the options I was given I gave up, he seemed to want to blame my problems with the truck because its a crew cab, and basically rip was questioning my ability as a mechanic, (which I do take personally)when the fact is that the lack of instructions (most notably that his exhaust needs to use his down pipe to avoid modifications to OEM down pipe), cost me a lot more time than should ever be needed to install a truly bolt on exhaust system. To make things even worse, I had to use a piece of the old 3" mandrel system that I took extra care in removing so I could sell it after I opened up the bend over the axle(I ended up giving it away instead).

So as I said I am not happy with Rips system, maybe I am just unlucky and got one made on a Monday. But $450 I feel I was short changed and wished I had look around, and asked some questions like is there anything else I will need to install ? So I learned, and I hoped to pass this on to others, without getting into much detail, but you asked. As you noted I did have a problem with Stan's and I bought my next system elsewhere, and unfortunately it was not a better experience. So again I now am out looking for a system for my 2001 and it will not be from Rip.

For those that wish to go 4", yes do it, it sounds great, on my 1st gen, I gained 4psi of boost, and the EGTs went down 100 degrees. I intend to buy another 4" system for my 2nd gen, but it will be a 14 gauge pipe system this time.

I hope you expected to have problems with the system, it was designed as a system to replace the OEM system that came with a Dodge that was initially manufactured with the CTD as a power plant.

Your truck was not manufactured with the CTD as a power plant! I would hope that anyone with your "ability as a mechanic" would realize that when dealing with a "one off" vehicle you will have problems retrofiting a system to the vehicle.

The fault is not with Rip, or the system he sold you.

It is with the vehicle you intended to put the system on!

Place the blame where it belongs... ... go look in your driveway!

Diesel Freak

YOU BETTER KNOW your facts before you open your keyboard. IF you knew anything about my truck or the conversion process you would have not made that post.

FACT The Crew Cab Has ALL 1991 CUMMINS TURBO DIESEL COMPONENTS, That for you know it all means it has a 1991 CTD transmission/transfer case crossmenber, a 1991 4X4 Cummins engine

Cradle. not to mention ALL DRIVE TRAIN COMPONENTS as well.

To keep is simple On my truck, ALL 1991 Cummins Turbo Diesel components interchange, INCLUDING the Exhaust which only needs to be lengthen AFTER the trans/transfer case cross member. The ONLY other EXCEPTION is the Rear Drive shift. I don't know why you attacked me but YOU ARE WRONG, Even Rip said that there is a DIFFERENCE in exhaust system length if you use an OEM down pipe, unfortunately he told me AFTER it was all said and done. IF you don't believe me ask the other 1st gen crew cabs builders.

IF YOU BUILD the Crew Cab CORRECTLY, no one will be able to tell by looking at the truck that it did not come with a Cummins from the factory. And as a few of you out there can tell Diesel Freak, mine is one of them VERY Nice ones.

Did you use the supplied Down Pipe?

Was one supplied with the kit?

Did you opt to exclude the supplied downpipe from the order and try and use the OEM downpipe with the new system that is designed as Turbo to Tail?

oh geez...

Rip has always done right by me. He went out of his way to piece together a very functional 5" system for my truck. I am very pleased with the finished product. :D

Diesel Freak you STILL don't get it

Rip is the one that said if my down pipe was still good to reuse it, So I reused my OEM down pipe per Rips suggestion.

"Did you opt to exclude the supplied downpipe from the order and try and use the OEM downpipe with the new system that is designed as Turbo to Tail?"

Maybe you should have that Question before you posted this

"The fault is not with Rip, or the system he sold you.

And then for you personal ATTACK

"Your truck was not manufactured with the CTD as a power plant! I would hope that anyone with your "ability as a mechanic" would realize that when dealing with a "one off" vehicle you will have problems retrofiting a system to the vehicle. "

Now Diesel Freak I don't know what your problem is, but I am tired of Your personal attacks. It is obvious that you have some interest in Rips business, either its personal or other:confused: .

But you keep coming at me , for reasons unknown. I don't spend my time posting complaints like others, and making personal comments about when they write something I didn't like. I posted in this forum what problems I had had with a product and made some suggestions WITHOUT getting personal.

But again, you want to keep bashing me, and not looking at the facts. So whats your problem with me? Do you have a problem with someone expressing their opinions comrade ?

Kyle

Has anyone used Rip's downpipe with a long exhaust housing. i am planning on using a 14 cm^2 non-wastegated housing, but would like to add new exhaust at the same time. I asked Rip and he didn't even know that there were different length exhaust housings available. I guess I could get his and cut it down, but that will leave a nasty looking downpipe right in the middle of my engine compartment. Any ideas?

Are there any 4" exhaust systems for first gens that will accomodate the longer housing???

Thanks

Dan

Actually, I am just bored. I am also sick and tired of people airing their dirty laundry on the boards.

If you have a problem with a vendor, take it up with the vendor. Don't vent on TDR and expect sympathy.

now where is my big TDR spoon?

Then I suggest you don't read the posts, Diesel freak.

Last I knew TDR was here to exchange information and tips, When someone has a problem with a product or its installation, it needs to be known. I have no agenda, hidden or other wise. It seems like you do though. It is up to the TDR members to keep the vendors honest, IF no one says anything if they have a problem with a part or vendor, what is the point of reading and posting? Especially if some jerk flames them for it. Do you want people to repeat others waste of time and failures ?

When I have found a good product or vender, I am even more vocal yet. Will you find that just as offensive ? Good I hope you do, because here is my partial list of really great venders

These are the guys that helped me with my questions and went out of their way on occasion. without their help, I would have not been able to build a factory looking Cummins Crew Cab, not once but TWICE !

So if I read your post correctly, you think it up to you to trash anyone who has a negative thing to say about anything on the discussion forums at TDR just because you have nothing better to do? And what qualifies something as dirty laundry, something to do with that you have connections with :-{} ?

"Actually, I am just bored. I am also sick and tired of people airing their dirty laundry on the boards" Diesel Freak

So Diesel freak, have a nice day.
