I recently took out the rear extended cab seat to do some measurements for a subwoofer box or two, whether it be with the seat in place or out of the truck. Got the seat out the one night, went down the road the next day and I can hear all of the dirt and snow kick up from the tires while driving down the road. Also it seems as if the truck doesn't hold it's interior heat as well between the time you leave it and the time you get back in and drive. Is their some sort of cab drain in the back that i'm not aware of, or is their a cab vent back their that is now more noticeable without the seat in place, or is that back metal that thin so the noise comes through it? What i'm thinking is the rear seat sound proofed it. Also, could it be coming from the holes that the seat bolts down into? Is this something that I can get rid of if I do leave the seat out?

Thanks,

Trever

Thanks.

Would something like Dynamat or B-Quiet Brown Bread work? Seem's as if that metal is very thin, makes that ding noise whenever you touch it. :D

Do a search for "sound" and you'll probably find tons of reading on sound proofing--etc.

Greg is the leader of the sound control gang. His handle here is lsfarm. The tell me you can hear a gnat fart in his truck. :p

Trever, a great product to use behind the cab is GSI Soundstop foam. This works best in conjunction with something (such as lead, dynamat etc. ) that adds mass to the panel and reduces vibration. Good luck. KL

So are we all safe to say that there are no holes or anything like that in the back of the cab that I uncovered while taking the seat out, and that the noise is just coming from the 40 ga. rear cab metal? :D

Where can I find some info on that GSI foam? Is it something that goes over or under the sound deadener?

Also is their some sort of sound deadener that is colored or paintable for looks so I don't have to put the seat back in? Don't know how it would look with shiny sound deadener out in the open. May be kind of cool with some neons or lights though. Hmm... ...

Trever, go to www.soundstop.com to see the Great Southern Insulation (GSI) web page.

You need to attach something to the bare metal first and apply the foam over that. I used GSI's sound dampening sheet (similar to dynamat). But if I had to do it over, I would use lead sheeting the next time. Weldwood contact cement works good for attaching the GSI Soundstop foam (this foam is about 1 pound/square foot, so you may need to hold it up for a few minutes till it stays up by itself). The foam side should face toward the back wall and the mylar side toward the interior of the cab. KL

P. S. TDR members get a 30% or 35% discount on the superfoam and 15% discount on everything else. But you need to call and let them know you are a TDR member.

P. S. I am not affiliated with GSI, however I feel that they excellent products IMHO.

Thanks KL

Do you know about how long shipping takes for that Soundstop? Is their a rough amount on how much it takes for each area? Is that lead sheeting safe to use, and is it available for consumers? Also still looking for ideas of stuff to mask the look of the sound deadener on the back wall if I keep the back seat out. Paint, carpet, ..... ?

I'd vote for carpet if I was going to keep the seat out of it. Would probably look nicer if you could find the right stuff, plus the additional sound deadening.

Trever, I can't remember, but I think it took a little over a week to get the stuff from GSI. It took about one sheet of soundstop foam to cover the area behind the rear seat.

I'm not sure where to find the lead sheets, but I think I remember reading where some people have found the lead sheets at roofing supply places. Maybe someone can chime in. KL

What kind of carpet do you call the stuff in our trucks? Something that I can get at a fabric store or like "Floor to Ceiling"? :)

I think I will get in contact with GSI shortly. I'm not too sure about using lead for some unknown reason. I'm kind of waiting for my box builder to respond before I go ahead and go hog wild on ordering stuff. I talked to a subwoofer company, Image Dynamics, and they recommended 4 12's for my truck in a ported box tuned to 32 Hz with a Kicker 1600W Amp that I picked out. One in each corner facing the front seats and one in each corner on the top facing the sealing. Wow! So I went and responded to the box builder what I got told from the company, but he hasn't responded back yet. Maybe I scared him. :D We'll see.

Have A Good Night,

Trever
