Just completed our vacation road trip for 2015.
40 hours of ignition time, 2098 miles in one week, in "Midnight" our 2014 Durango R/T.
The original route was to just travel from NYC to Hilton Head Island, SC, check out the island and beaches, and return home. We did that and we enjoyed the Disney vacation club resort we stayed at, but the kids were missing our last impressionable trip- to Pigeon Forge, TN and the SMOKEY'S. On the 4th day, we were able to check out of HHI and we headed up I26 to I40, through Maggie Valley (never been) and over the "hill" and into Dolly's new resort "Dream Maker" where we got a room for the balance of our time. This resort was fantastic, and I highly recommend it!
Midnight ran flawlessly, avg 22.5 MPG running speed limit +5. I dearly miss the tourque of my Cummins, but it's a good ride! Traveling with us for all this were friends in a new Kia Sorento 4 cyl. Both vehicles got almost the same fuel mileage, but the Durango out ranged the Kia almost 2:1 due to tank size.
The point of interest to the TDR folks was the overwhelming appearance of 4 gen CTD's doing all sorts of tasks everywhere we went- Hotshotting, towing RV's of all sizes, and just runnin' bobtail. I also saw plenty of 2 and 3 gen's looking very good- to the point of being restored and BOMBED. I did not see many current Ford SD's, and saw more Chevy silverado 1/2t's and Canyon/ Colorados. I saw that all the hotels now have Ford Transit vans and saw one Diesel Transit- it had the same round emblem the SD's have on a rear door.
The main highway observations were; fuel prices, lots of commerce and ROAD GATORS! The low Gas price noted was below $1.90 and D was close to $2 in SC and TN. All around and especially I95(S) the tire carcasses (road gators) were more than numerous, and looked awful to the point of being a regular sight. Isn't anyone doing their pretrips and pulling tires when they should? Obviously it's easier and cheaper to just let it blow on the road? Not very safe!
All around, and especially I81, the commerce was big! Doubles, plenty of new mediums and heavies being piggybacked to bodybuilders and all kinds of Military equipment were seen all the time.
