Road use tire recommendations...

Time has come to replace the factory installed Goodyear Wrangler AT tires on my '97 - 1 ton.



I only use the truck to tow over the road (a 38' enclosed car trailer) so the agressive lug tire is not necessary and way too noisy for my liking.



We currently run a front axle weight of 4040, on the dually rears we scale at 6400 and on the triple's on the trailer 11,300 which gives me a gross of 21,740 lbs.



I see the new trucks come with the Goodyear Wrangler MT which seems to be better suited for my application but..... Are we within or outside the safety range of these Goodyear tires?



A question for all the heavy load guys... What are you using on your trucks?

We have a 94 1ton at work we haul 4000 to 6000 lbs in every day, the factory Goodyears where bald at 25,000mi. Tire dealer in town told me about Mastercraft M210 tires that he had been having good luck with a customer pulling a 30' cattle trailer. We put a set on in Sept. of 94 with 25,000 on the truck and replaced them Nov. 99 the truck had 178,000mi on it. Tire dealer said he could get $40. 00 for the used tires from a Co. that recaps them but we keep them to use for spares. They are not cheap but wear like iron, and are not the thing to have in snow.

I would see what Cooper has in the size you want. I am on my second set. My first set went 65K miles.

If you're lookng for high mileage and your budget allows, it's worth considering upgrading the tire/rim combination to 19. 5 inches from the factory 16 inch size.

When the time came to replace the stock Wrangler AT's on our 1996 3500, we went with the Wrangler RT-S. Lots quieter and better handling on the highway - we use our 3500 almost exclusively for highway towing of our 5ver, so the RT-S has worked just fine for us. The more conservative tread pattern seems to be wearing much better than the AT's did, as well.
