I want to put a set of ARP head studs in my truck and was wondering what the machining of the pedestal rockers meant. Why do they need this and would I be okay if I didn't do it and just put the studs in? Also how well does the grinding of an OEM stud work to remove the debri from inside the hole?

The head stud kit was been revised. There was a clearance problem between the new head stud/nut and the underside of the valve cover. The updated kit has shorter studs to allow proper clearance to the valve cover. In order to keep a full nut of threads, the rocker arm pedestal needs to be machined . 200" shorter where the head stud and nut seat on the pedestal. There is a very good picture included in the instructions that come with the studs kit. I have a set of the ARP #247-4203 available for the 12 valve engine.
 
And to answer your other question, I ground a groove down the side of one stock head bolt of each length and used them as clean-out tools before installing the studs. I'd shoot a little brake cleaner down the hole, run the slotted bolt down and back out, then blow it out with an air gun. Put a little anti-seize on the stud before screwing it in. Screw it in with your fingers only till it begins to snug, then lube the washer and nut and screw it on.
