So is there a down side to this "reverse" direction? Is it louder outside the 1800-2500 rpm range? Is backpresure higher? Why wouldn't this be considered the normal direction if it is so good?

Well, hindsight is 20/20. The new instructions reflect this. He installed it per the old. (This site does not have that smilie with the hammer to the head, or this would be a good place to use it :{ )

The "old" direction makes it sound more racy around those rpm at the expense of a little louder while towing at those rpm. The "new" is quiet all around, maybe too quiet for some even without a catalyst. If you don't tow heavy, you can use stainless band clamps and hang it with wire until you decide which way you like it better.

Well that's just GREAT! I could have had it quieter. No thanks. :D As I said in one of my earlier posts, I wanted quiet, and I really like the way it sounds now. I'm glad I had it installed the loud way, which isn't loud, but it sounds good!

Paul, about how much quieter do you think it is installed "backwards"?

The old way (like you have it), it starts to sound a little throaty around 1850 up to about 2050, more so on the long wheelbase trucks. I like that sound, and it lets you roar a little in that rpm band if you feel like it, but pulling a trailer in the hills, I was able to make the muffler sing around 2000 rpm at full power (like trying to accelerate uphill). Backing off the power a little (just maintaing speed uphill, not accelerating) would stop it. With stock power you would probably never hear what I am talking about. Empty, it would just accelerate past that rpm, so it never gets loud.

"Backwards", or the new recommended way, it gets quieter the higher the rpm, above 1800 (and it stays just as quiet as before, below 1800), and you hear nothing on the freeway, except at full power, when it's a dry, distant sound, not something that starts any boominess in the cab. Great for towing crosscountry, and great without a cat.

Wish you would have posted this yesterday, before I had it welded on. All my towing is cross country, and very heavy. If it gives me a headache I'll turn it around. Empty @ 9500 lbs between buildings, sounds NICE. Sounds Magical. :D

Wait a minute.

Do your instructions say "revised June 2006"? If the internal holes are in front, it's the new quieter way, if they are in back it's the old way.

Also, the new instructions tell you in fine print at the bottom that you may install it backwards (which is the old way) but it will be a little throatier.

So which way did they weld it on? I think you have it the quieter way.

So how does the muffler permanently mount? Does it use the factory hanger points?

BTS- I have a 2006 Mega cab... I bought your muffler and a Genos garage ME kit... . I have the cat and the factory resonator on my truck... . I started with the ME kit (thought it would be the loudest)... . and I can honestly say... . it sounds good with "little" in cab resonance (just off idle for a slit second) its actually quiet enough that the wife didnt even ask... "what the heck did you F'with now?"... LOL

MY question is... . since the str8 pipe isnt annoying..... what combo would be BEST?? (truck is a daily driver... with minimal towing... 6000+ lb enclosed snowmobile trailer)

1) What I have now... . (acceptible)

2) Silent might installed the new way w/cat @ res... . (quietest)

3) Silent might installed the new way with no cat @ res... (throaty but quiet)

4) Silent might installed the old way w/cat @ res... . (same as #1??)

I "want" near stock sound (a little rumble is OK) and the MOST power..... thanks-BJ

BTW- please elaborate on the post asking about your crank trigger mod... .

Thats the thing... what one person likes the next doesn't. My son straight piped his 3rd gen, I tell him it sounds like a 40K derby car.

betterthanstock,

Why would you put on two mufflers?

You must have read the year-old thread. With the new muffler orientation, I am not using anything but a 4" straight pipe (mine is an 03), no cat, no other muffler or resonator.

#3, new way, no cat, + rear resonator (not that you need that resonator, but I doubt it has any real restriction, and it's easier to leave it in) For those who don't know, the mega cabs have an extra resonator over the rear axle, probably to combat some boominess due to the larger volume cab.

If you look at the previous page pictures, there are 2 J-hooks the muffler shop welded on (I think there is a third one barely visible between frame rail and muffler), and they attach to the factory rubber hangers.

Well, just ordered the SM. I'm going to go 'holes front. ' I hope my muffler shop can put this on correctly. Thanks to everyone here and Paul for the info. I keep saying I've bought the last goodie for the truck, but you know how that goes!

Since the 06 has a 4in exhaust I think I want to change just the muffler,I have a Areoturbine muffler sitting in the garage from my 03 that I never put on. maybe I can make that work. Don't know if I would like the sound though
