hey everyone im back after a couple year break, anyhow i want to install a set of aftermarket roof lights on my 02 2nd Gen. When i pull the headliner down will i find any indication where the holes will need to be drilled in roof (ooch)! almost 100 percent sure the lights are a relica of the o. e. lights, also did the factory be kind enough to run the wiring harness up into the headliner. Last question guys about the screw hardware! nuts or clips? available from the dealer?

clearance lights

I have done a 3rd gen and 2nd gen no markers to guide you I just spaced out the 5 lamps on top the way I wanted them and took a small greese pencil and marked the spots to drill. put em in place wired and them went back and dabbed silicon on the the screws coming in as extra moisture protector. I also got small rubber 0-rings to put on the head of the screws to help seal up the light from the outside. never had a leak problem. I took my power wire from the hot-dimmer wire. so now I can dim down the clearance lights if I ever want to. good luck.

On my 1995 2500, the places for the lights were clearly marked on the inside. I wouldn't have even had to use the template--wish I'd checked first before I went to all the trouble of marking it.

That said, I like having clearance lights. They make the truck a lot more visible to morons who don't really pay attention. But just in case they are REALLY not paying attention, I also installed a UTE Bullbar! :-laf

Does it work with all these CA idiots though? We were coming back to Lockeford (hometown) from Tulare at the World Ag Expo and me and a buddy in a duramax were cruising about 80-85 and this minivan hauls A%$ past us and I look over and he has a burger in one hand, a drink in the other and playing with the radio. I just about drove off the road cause I was so stunned :-laf

It only works with the ones who are not: Driving stoned, putting make-up on--(that goes for both men & women out here!), having Clinton-type sex, text messaging, writing a screenplay, shooting at other gang members... in other words it doesn't work all that well in Cal!

Oh, I also hooked my clearance lights up to a toggle switch (through the ground wire) so I can flash them on and off if I darn well feel like it. I also run them on a relay to cut down on light-switch fatigue.

As someone mentioned, when you pull the headliner down, there is five holes that about 1. 5 inches in diameter. That is where the lights are supposed to go. Now the trick is trying to punch in the center of them. When i did mine, i punched up a small amount, and then punched back down so i didn't have as much metal filings coming into the cab. It worked pretty good. Suggestion, though, use some 2x12's on step ladders or something to stand/kneel/sit on whatever, cuz its a real pain in the *** trying to do it from the sides... ...

Good luck!!

I wondered if a 1. 5 inch hole saw would be easier to center the holes with. . Don't let the drum cut through, just let it center the pilot bit. I'm thinking about doing the mod and have been debating on how to locate the holes from the inside.

that would probably work, but measure the holes before you buy the hole saw, cuz my 1. 5 inch is just an approx. guess. Remember that if you drill from the inside that you will have a lot of metal filings falling all over your seat and dash... just something to keep in mind. Good luck!!

Lol You mean my seat frame (no cushion left) and dash with a hole where the cup holder once was... Not much to lose. :D

If I work this method out, I'll snap pics and post them.

How large does the hole for the lights need to be anyway?
