I have recently changed over to Rotella Synthetic 5w40 for wintertime use.

How long can I run this oil before changing?

Currently I run around with the TST on level 1 or 2, (moderate foot).

I am also using the stratopore filter.

12k on the clock, thinking of changing at about 22k.

????

I run mine for 15k miles with filter changes every 5K miles. Oil samples say it could go longer but thats my limit.

Is the Rotella 5w40 synthetic your using a CI-4 rated oil? I was in Wally World the other day and the Rotella 5w40 they had on the shelf was only rated to CH-4 which does not meet the requirements for our 3rd gen trucks. I run the Delvac1 which is a CI-4 rated synthetic 5w40. If Delvac1 is hard to come by in your area you can use Mobil1 Truck&SUV which is relabled Delvac1 in quart containers.

rotella 5w40 is CI rated, but many places have old stock bottles, but the contents are just as good... i don't have egr systems to deal with so we don't get near as much soot load into the lube oil. .

On my 99 Dodge diesel I change the oil every 3000 miles and filter also and used Rotella 15w40 non synthetic. Never had a problem. What should I use In my 2004 which Is new?How often should I go before I change the oil. I have never used synthetic oil In any of my cars or truck. I guess I am from the old school. I try to take care of y engines.

i plan on servicing mine 2x per year. once in the spring, once in the fall... that's pretty much what i've been doing to all my vechicles i have been driving. run which ever interval you feel comfortable with.

You might not believe this, but here goes. I once read in a John Deere manual, that after engine rebuild you are suppost to use a break-in oil by JD. This oil is suppost to be a low grade oil, to allow metal wear upon break in. Makes perfect sense to me. Thus I would say it might not be a good idea to use synthetics right outta the gate, but in reality, it probably makes no difference noticeable. Oil never wears out, only the additives do anyway. I would just say use a good quality oil like dello or delvac or rotella, synthetic, or not and change it at a reasonable intervel.

So 10k interval ok with sythetic??

I plan on changing filter at 5k and add the appropriate amount of oil.

jwilliams3... You'll be fine with that schedual. This has been beaten to death on TDR but the days of 3000 mile oil/filter changes are gone (in the opinion of most).

Todays engines and oils are far better that what was available 20 years ago. If you do a search you'll find guys going 20k and 30k miles between changes using regular "dino" oil (like 15W/40).

The Rotella 5W/40 synthetic is a good oil (maybe not the "best") and will last way longer than your 10k mile interval.
