Well I broke 25000 miles and needed an oil change so I decided run down to Walmart and try out the Rotella 5w 40w synthetic. Seeing the price was about double that of 10w 40w dyno, I hesitated thinking maybe this was like the snake oil sold by Dr. Feelgood in the 1800s. After 150 miles the engine sounds smoother and quieter. My wife also mentioned that the truck seems quieter. With an 80 gal aux tank I don't fill up vary often but the over head is showing about 2 miles better then normal.

Is it just me or do you fellows using synthetic find that your washpan full of ball bearings under the hood has quieted down.

I run synthetic in both CTD and noticed upon start up that it idled smooter and slightly higher rpm, less friction i guess . The differnce was noticeable and the used oil seemed cleaner . I dont have any numbers or other data to prove it .

Oil samples would be they way to go to prove its lubricity.

Yeah I'm thinking of making the switch to synthetic too, the price of dyno is getting crazy.

That's a good point - I haven't been watching the price of synthetics to see if they have changed as have the Dino stuff - if not, now might be a good time to switch since the cost advantage is largely reduced... ;)

I change my oil every 5000 I use Rotella 15-40

All my driving is long distance with the 95 Dodge Motor Home Class C with a CUMMINS and no better engine. I run 65 to70 most of the time. My wife loves to drive it. Every summer we head west to the Rockies. I could live there but wife says no. She boss I guess until she crokes or me. One thing for sure where she spits grass won't grow.

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a big fan of Rotella T 15W-40 dino. Why you ask? Well, I've looked at waaaay to many UOA's of trucks running good ol' Rotella 15W-40 and the Fe wear for the most part is always a little higher than those trucks running the other competitive dino oils out there (Delo 400, Mobil Delvac 1300, VPB, etc... ). What do I think is the best dino oil out there? Delo 400 hands down.

Now, I will say this about the dino Rotella T15W-40 counterpart... ..... the Rotella T Syn 5W-40 is a darn good oil and has proven itself as a very good formulated oil that shows great wear, good TBN retention, and is shear stable. I would put the Rotella syn 5W-40 against most other syn oils out there. Yes, I do know that Rotella syn uses a Group III basestock.

I use the Rotella Synthetic oil and change it every 6K. The only thing I don't like about it is the odor. But 3oz of MMO takes care of that, for some reason. It is one of the better price oils out there.

You add something to a perfectly formulated oil? Check this out.

Not Schaffer's 9000 right? :D

:D Believe it or not, yes I would. It really is a good oil. Thing is, it costs $16 a gallon at the wal-marts (as my family calls it) and that's about what the Schaeffer's 9000 runs so it doesn't make sense to pay about the same for a lesser base stock oil.

What's the shell additive pack look like? I was impressed with Schaeffer's and Redline from the VOAs I've looked at. As far as the dino, Delo 400 looks best to me.

Shoot, your family and mine must be related cause they also called it Walmarts. My grandma calls it Walmarks even :-laf

That's interesting about the high phosphorus content of the Rotella syn. You think that gives a similar positive effect as the moly in Schaeffer's?

Hate to rain on anyones party but that's for the CI-4 oil, what about CJ-4 oil which is all your going to get soon unless you buy in bulk, like 30 gallon drums or larger.

OK what are you telling us. Are you saying that we will no longer be able to buy Rotella 5w40 in the gallon container? I would not choose to buy my oil in ten change increments. Not a good marketing choice for Shell to make.

No, he's saying that the Shell Rotella syn will shortly switch over to the newly formulated CJ4 in gallon containers. The old CI4+ formulation will only be available in bulk.
