I've got 20,000 miles and am switching to synthetic. I didn't see any 15W-40 synthetics so I got the Rotella 5W-40 synthetic. Does anyone else use this oil? Is it just as safe as the 15W-40 dino oil? Thanks for any advice.

Plenty as safe and better than regular oil.

Although the Rotella Synthetic is not a "true" synthetic as claimed on the bottle.

So the fact that it is a 5W instead of the 15W recommended is not cause for alarm? I had also heard it was not a true synthetic, but I compared the information on the back of the bottle to all of the information on the back of a Mobil One bottle, and it had all of the certifications plus a few more - so I was hoping this might be a new formula?? Is there any way of knowing for sure which synthetics are true synthetics?

5w is the startup weight. Once the oil reaches operating temp then it is 40w which is the real important part. The 5w oil aids in cold startups.

The Rotella Synthetic is a great oil, its just not PAO based like Mobil one.

You can use it with confidence and no alarm. It is in my truck as we speak!

I thought Mobil Delvac 1 or Mobil 1 Truck and SUV (repackaged Delvac 1) were the CI-4 (or CI-4 Plus) API-certified oils. Does Mobil 1 5W-40 carry a CI-4 API rating for diesel service?

Rusty

What is the difference between the CI-4 and CI-4 Plus? If I remember correctly, the Rotella had the plus rating and the Mobil One did not have it.

Plus is for the EGR equiped engines, our Cummins do not need the plus rating.

That is just icing on the cake, but a CI-4 rated oil is what our Cummins is designed to use.

If I was running synthetic I see no reason not to run a 5w40 vs. a 15w40.

At $4/quart at Walmart the Mobil 1 Trucks & SUV (aka Mobil Delvac 1) 5w40 is hard to beat when looking at a synthetic engine oil to use.

Amsoil 15W-40 here too. I am going to change back to Delo 400 for the next oil change though. I switched to synthetic too soon and I am using too much oil. I don't think my engine is broken in enough for synthetic just yet.

Walmart just started carrying the Mobil 1 Truck/SUV 5-40 with the CI-4 rating it's about 23 bucks for 5 quarts if I lived in a cold climate I would run it in the winter. You just can't beat the Delo oil deal at Costco. Synthetic is just to expensive to justify out in Mild Port Orchard, Washington.

Just a thought?

A good friend of mine has a 99 Ferd super duty, 7. 3 power stroke, it had 445,000 miles on it when the motor cracked a piston. His motor was pumping out pretty good hp most of its life, it has injectors, computer, hypermax turbo, etc. When we tore the motor down to see what was wrong with it, we inspected the bearings, they looked to be in excellent shape, we also noticed that there was still some cross hatching marks in the cylinders. All of this motors life it has has Shell Rotella 15-40 dino oil. He usually changed the oil when needed but on some of the oil changes it was over 10,000 miles.

So my thought on this is the synthetic worth the extra cost. I am sure that the 15-40 rotella oil is a great oil, if it wasn't I don't think that you would see it in every truck stop, and all the truckers wouldn't run it if it wasn't.

Just me thinking out loud?

Dustin

Really,

If your gonna run 5-7k intervals and want the synthetic advantages without the hassle of analysis. Rotella 5w40 synthetic is ideal.

ITS CHEAP TOO!

Amsoil 15-40 in my truck, but I use Rotella 5-40 in the wifes vw. It seems to work just fine however the mobil suv oil is not much more. After I use up my current case I might switch.
