I buy Rotella synthetic at Wal-Mart for $18 per gallon. Good stuff for a decent price. They were closing it out and selling it for $12 but that seems to have gone away.

i am reaserching this stuff on the web and i am finding that people are saying this Rotella syn. is a group III oil and not a group IV oil like the rest of the syn. 's. i read this is really overpriced for what you are getting. any feed back?

Just a reminder, don't use any synthetic oil in the engine until you get at least 20,000 on the truck. You may already know this, but for those that don't, you have to break that diesel in first.

On my earlier truck I ran Valvoline Premium Blue 2000, which I could buy in bulk from my Cummins dealer at a "Power Booster" discount. It is a group IV oil.

My 2 cents. .

I don't sell it but I am running it in my 02 VW Jetta TDI

Amsoil series 3000 5w-30 I am incredibly happy with this oil.

I went out this morning, 7 degrees and it started up as if it was warm out. I have talk to others and they claim better MPG and I don't think you have to change it for 25K, alittle long for me but thats the claim? I went to fla. over the holidays driving an average 77 MPH and got 48MPG with the automatic... My gas Jetta got 42 MPG on a lifetime of Mobil1 15w50, so you do what you have to, But I am running Amsoil series 3000 5W30 in my new 03 CTD.

Cost 24. 90 per gallon +S&H

PB2000 or PB Extreme is not Group IV

I also used PB2000. It is and was a good oil. It is NOT a Group IV synthetic. It is actually a synthetic blend.

Mobil Delvac 1 and Amsoil 15W40 or 5W30 are just a few that I know of.

I have ran all the above. There is no comparison between PB2000 and Delvac or Amsoil.

Good luck so far. My analysis numbers are as good or better than the Delvac 1 was at about half the price. I bought a bunch at Wally World. :D :D :D

FWIW, I switched to the Rotella 5-40w synthetic this past weekend.

Prior to that, it has been unusually cold here in Maine and last week, with the temperature at -22F, it took so long for the oil pressure gauge to register pressure I almost turned off the ignition. I was using 10-30w Rotella (non-synthetic) as my winter oil at that time.

The synthetic does well so far (cold-starting) and has the proper 'C' designations. My understanding is that it can be used year-'round as well. If there is a reason I shouldn't be using this please let me know. I have been happy with Rotella and tend to trust their products.

It IS expensive. $19 per gallon at WALMART.

AMSOIL 26. 90 A GALLON:--) I DONT THINK SO!

i am going to research this further i like rotella products but we will see!?

My other 2 cents... :)

I feel whether its Mobil Syn, Rotella Syn, Amsoil Syn, etc. . as long as it meet cummins standards for use then price can matter then. All of them are excellent choices, it an opinion thing from there. I just like Amsoil as well as Silver and not Black. . :D :p

You are correct, it IS a blend. Oops on my part. Still like it though... . and agree with your comments. As far as the opinions on oil, well we all know about the opinion thing..... you have to be happy with what you run, regardless of opinions!

Am sure that the Group III Rotella "synthetic" 5w40 is a good oil. When it was $13. 00 a gallon at Wal Mart I was considering using it after break-in in the winter time. However, since Wal Mart has gone back up to $18 a gallon on the stuff, I would pay the few dollars extra and get Delvac I, a Group IV true synthetic that has been around a long time and has an excellent track record. I was hoping that the prices of these Group III "synthetics" would come down since it is my understanding that it costs a lot less to produce them than the true Group IV synthetics such as Delvac I and Mobil I. Guess the oil companies have to make a buck someway. I definitely feel the Group III oils are overpriced. Not saying they aren't good products, but overpriced.
