Did the oil change thing in the truck yesterday. Today, I can barely stand to stop at stoplights... the smell that seems to come from the vent tube is absolutely nauseating. And I have a cold, too. Nose plugged up terrible. It's ok when you're driving, but stop at a light or stop sign and it comes in the heater...

Does this stop? If not, this is nutso... I can't stand it.

It smells vaguely like 90W or oil leaking on the exhaust... But the instant you shut the engine off, the smell dissipates, so I dont' think it's that.

One of the better point of a diesel

Changed my oil last weekend with Rotella and mine does the same thing. It should last about 2 to 3 weeks and then it will go away. I have a good remedy for the smell though, it involves eating a bunch of refried beans and drinking large quanities of beer. (I think you know what happens next):D I would like to know if there is a way to remmedy the smell though. (of the truck)

Not a chance. If this isn't gone ASAP, that's the last time Rotella-T is getting anywhere near my truck.

I'll try WalMart's SuperTech Diesel Oil before I endure this again. There must be something breaking down... something that's not good going on. I can't imagine how something could smell like burned 90W or smoldering engine oil and NOT be the result of bad things happening.

It's not the just the Rotella. I use Valvoline Premuim Blue and the same thing happens. As far as I know, it happens with most all the oils used in our trucks.

Dave.

Power Wagon,

I know what you are talking about. Delo 400, my opinion, has less smell on fresh start than the Rotella and some other oils.

PW after all this time of reading threads on oil and whatnot you didn't know that Rotella stinks like all hell ;). I put rotella in mine once, I could have sworn I spilled a gallon in the floor is smelled so much. Now I use Hydroclear and no smell at all... give it a shot next time

Don't breath!

Check your hood/firewall seal. Is it still pushed firmly on the pinchweld at the top of the firewall? I had to glue mine on, since it stuck better to the hood than on the pinchweld. Every time I opened the hood the rubber seal got pulled off the pinchweld.

When this seal falls off, the crankcase breather fumes are blown back by the fan and sucked straight into the heater. It may also help to add a small piece of foam rubber to complete the seal at the outer ends of the factory seal. Mine had 2" gaps from the factory

Then, if you want, remove the breather 'pillbottle' and extend the breather hose down below the engine, tie-wrap the extension hose to the track bar or other item. Then remove the fan, and you won't smell your engine's flatulence any more:) :D

A search for fan or fanless, and breather or pillbottle will give you plenty of extra reading.

Hope this helps Greg L

PW, the Rotella and the Premium Blue both have an offending smell to some people. I dont mind it, but the Delo will not have the stinky and is just as good.

I kinda like the Rotella smell myself.

Rosmella

yep, i, too am wierd... ..... don't mind the smell at all... ... . tells me my oil is "fresh"... ... ..... i have a friend who likes the smell of roadkilled skunks... ... ... GO FIGURE???:D :D

Rotella it smella

I've tried both Rotella and Valvo Premium Blue at least once. I use Delo instead in all my rigs. Delo does have a smell at first also, but it smells like a rose compared to those others.

It doesn't smell bad to me. I grew up playing in and around big rigs, my daddy was a trucker, so were my uncles. The smell brings back many, many happy memories, and makes me itch to get under there and turn a wrench. I miss the smell since going to Amsoil. But every once in a while, I get a whiff of diesel, especially in cold weather. :) Then the smile comes creeping back on my face.

When I was four, I stuck my arm up to the shoulder in a drum of axle grease. It felt nice :D and smelled good :D I terrorized my dad's garage, his poor mechanics could hardly get any work done. And those original Jeepers Creepers, they sure scooted a lot easier across bumpy concrete than the cheapo AutoZone creepers we are stuck with today. Of course, I'm about 200lbs. heavier now. :D

:D Mine smells but not that bad. Like Lsfarm said you might have a leak. I like the smell, I on the other hand think it means it is doing good things. Can't wait for my next oil change. :)

Someone enlighten me what is hydroclear?

HydroClear is a Conoco brand oil. They call it Power-D 15-40. THe base oil used is high quality and clear as water, the color comes from the additives. I've used it in my 3500 for a year now. There is a slight odor but nothing like Rosmella, I mean Rotella.

BTW, I was turned onto the oil because I used to work for Conoco, since I recently took a job at Chevron, I now run Delo 400, which also doesn't smell that bad when new.

I was turned onto the hydroclear by the shop that does the maintinence on my work truck. He strongly recomends it and I can get a After hours Lube oil and fleetguar. Filter for $30+some cold beer. I have always changed my own oil in the past. But I really don't want to jack with getting rid of 11+qts of oil.

Well... I have gotten kinda lazy also

Yep! Rotella, & Premium Blue both give that "superior" stink!! Either one is strong enough to darn-near make ya puke!!

It does go away after about 300-400 miles, but was enough for me to not use either brand anymore. Theyre good oil, but just stink more.

Delo 15/40 isnt near as strong smelling, and has given good results.

The Amsoil 15/40 HD syn isnt near as bad either, if you dont mind paying the price.

You get used to it after awhile, and after 3 years I kinda like it. :D

Yep got it bad, I also use diesel fuel in my calone to. :D , then again I also tell my truck goodnight when I walk out of the pole barn. :p Oops I've said toooooo much.
