Letter from Valvoline concerning MAXLIFE ATF use

winter time oil

all,

i saw rotella T synthetic at wallyworld for 12 bux a gallon (i imagine that price can't be beat). jug said it was rated for diesel engines; 5w-40

anyone used rotTsyn? what do you think of it?

it's my guess that everything else is probably 50% more in the synthetic world

The reason the price is so low is that this is a Group III (hydrocarbon) oil. It is not a Group IV PAO synthetic.

I'm using it right now. Seems good enough for whatever anyone is doing.

These engines aren't going to go more miles with the 20 dollar per gallon oil versus the 12 dollar per gallon so what's the point. It makes some people feel good to spend the big bucks and that's okay... . but if you prefer spending only 12 on a better cold weather viscosity instead of 20+, your engine will last as long as anyone's here.

Even though it isn't a group IV true synthetic it's properties are right up there with them.

Another case of you get what you pay for, it's a bit better than regular dino oils and a little less better than a true synthetic.

For now anyway.

With advancements in refining processes coming it is predicted that there will be no difference between group III and group IV characteristics in just a couple years.

I used it for awhile a few winters back and then wally world started to jump their prices all over, up and down, I just got tired of the roller coaster ride and went with Mobil Delvac 1, 5-40 oil for the same price of 18. 88 per gallon.

I don't do oil sampleing and for what I could tell in the bitter cold up here Rottela 5-40 performed about as good as the Delvac 5-40 does. The only reason I run it is because of the cold, other wise I would run Dino 15-40 year around.

does the jug state on it whether it is group III or IV?

what are all the SYNTHETIC oils that are group IV that are available?

like i stated before, the jug did say it was rated for gasoline AND DIESEL engines.

thank you for all inputs

No oil companies put the group rateing on the jug that I am aware of.

Rottela 5-40 is a group 3 oil.

The only group 4 oils that have been confirmed at this point are all the mobil synthetics.

Most of the amsoil, but not all, I beleave the amsoil 15-40 is a group 4.

Alot of group 3 oils are very good, just watch the price and compare to the group 4 oils.

According to another thread Redline is group 3 oil.

The word is still out on Royal Purple, At one point in time I beleave they were a Group 4 but things have changed and they could be blending to make up more profit, when I find out for sure I will pass on the information or just follow the other thread.
