I have 40K miles on my 2000 2500 Automatic. I use Rotella T and chane oil and filter every 5-6K miles (I tow a TT). Is there any advantage to going to synthetic lubricant (Amsoil, Mobil 1 etc)? Can't decide if I want to switch. Considering changing synthetic @15K miles and filter @7. 5K. How about synthetic Transmission fluid and rear end lube. Any feed back, opinions? Thanks

You will get millions of oppinions on this, most of which are just that - oppinions. I personally am a firm believer in synthetics, however, your engine will probably outlast you with a good quality convential oil. I will tell you that after switching to synthetics complete - engine, transmission, transfer case, front & rear differential, I picked up about 1. 5 mpg. That was done at about 60,000 miles. It'll take an awful lot of fuel to pay for the additional cost of the synthetics though. I did just completely change my dad's truck over, and he swears it runs quieter. I think changing the filter at 7500 miles, and oil & filter at 15000 miles would be perfect with a high quality synthetic, as long as most of your miles aren't in the city. I sure wouldn't go that far with a conventional oil. Good luck

I use the Rotella every 3,000 miles. Change filter of course also at this time. I know I will get beat up for this but the thought of 15,000 miles on an oil change is more than I can stand. If I go over or even at 3,000 it is pretty black sometimes. I am also aware that just because it is black don't mean it is bad. Hope this made sense!

If your truck is stock and you still have a warranty I would not consider using Amsoil. Amsoil is not certified or licensed by the API and the oil needs to be certified. Changing oil is not a fun thing to do, but with your 2000 I think you can go 7500 miles betweeen changes in most cases. There was a guy here just last night that posted his Rotella truck is at 375,000 miles and he uses it to hot-shot freight across the country. He changes at 5000 miles.

Other brands of synthetics are API certified. Amsoil does make a semi-synthetic oil that has API certification, but I have no experience with it.

Amsoil meets or exceeds API specs, so there is no reason to worry about it.

You will never have an oil related breakdown using Amsoil anyway, so the above is moot.

I seroiusly doubt you would have an oil related breakdown with regular oils either, so that is moot, also.

What you will gain, is extended drains, if you wish, oil that will not break down in the high heat situations of towing, easy cold weather starts, and some of the best wear protection you can find .

I would switch the transmission over first.

Try the search feature, you be AMAZED at the amount of information.

Do you have a crystal ball? How do you know he would not have an oil related breakdown?

If he does have an oil related breakdown from his lube pump and is still in warranty he could be denied coverage from DC if they find out he used a non API approved oil. This is more fact than fiction. And has been demonstrated by DC and Toyota.

Don~

Briar, your right... everyone go ahead and use a non API certified oil in your trucks. Briar says "its OK"

No, no CAnderson, you have to repeat it 10,000 times, then click your heels an kick ToTu to make that bad ol' Amsoil go away!

Look! It is in the closet!

Behind the cellar door!:D :D

I am up too late to be doing this!

Careful Don,,You'll void your warranty by going back to a dino oil in your "leaky"(blamed on ***oil)transfer case(especially when you know it was a full synthetic from the factory),,Since WCrawford is a new member(going by his post numbers) all I'll say is this,,Use the search engine and do a little leg work yourself on this and form your own opinion, because all your going to end up doing is getting yourself frustrated with reading where this will likely head,,Those of us who use synthetics and have had great success with them(no matter what brand of product)will give you our opinion about their usage, only to have the naysayers give you the"voids the warranty crapola" AGAIN,,Welcome to the TDR WCrawford hope you find what you seek... .....

Any warranty only covers "defects in material and workmanship". Is any oil going to cause a defective part? If so, the entire engine is going to be "toast"! And if the oil did cause the engine to be "toast", don't you think there would be more than one case, since oils are formulated and blended by the thousands of gallons at a time?

I have never seen or heard of an engine oil that will attack just one particular part in an engine. However, if you only install a couple of quarts and run the engine, I would think this is "Poor Workmanship". I have seen this happen at a local oil change shop!

I was going to post an actual on topic reply to this, but since it is obviously going to turn into a ******* match (both sides) I will not.

Girls, it is just oil... . what is the next argument going to be about?

Nair vs. the Epilady?

Hammer,

I let the comment slide the last time you brought it up about the transfer case having to be filled with synthetic. That is mis-information and total BS. The transfer case can have dino or synthetic. As long as it is Moper 7176, Mercon , or Dexron 3 rated.

Where are you getting this hogwash from? Since I dont know for sure, Im not going to say if the factory fills the transfer case with synthetic fluid from the factory or not, but I HIGHLY doubt it.

The certification system from the API is just a little insurance that the oil is meeting standards set forth by the engine manufacturers and the oil makers. Proper amounts of additives and the consistancy of the product is what the API looks for. They audit the oil makers that choose to have the certification for their products. Cummins and nearly all other engine manufacturers ask their customers to use an API certified product because they know the product will be the same time and time again and has the proper amount of additives.

There are limits to certain amounts of additives that each product can contain to conform.

WCrawford: I'll try to get this back to your original question.

I switched from Rotella to Mobile Delvac 1 at about 120,000 miles. I picked up at least 1 mpg . The truck is much quieter at startup in cold weather (below 45 degrees). I switched mostly because I was going to be using the truck in weather below 10 degrees for awhile. I'll continue with the Delvac for at least another 20,000 miles (I'm happy with it). I used to have to change the Rotella during a long trip (Every 6,000 miles) but now I can do a 10,000 or even a 15,000 mile trip without scheduling a oil change. There's something to be said for extented oil changes.

I also run Mobile synthetics in the transfer case and both axels. I don't know of any major brand synthetic ATF +3 or +4, so I use Quaker State ATF+3 in the transmission.

I don't think you can justify switching to synthetics on only a cost basis.
