This is mine first post on the site, because I have a problem I can't solve.

The engine sounds rough through all the revs.

Last week I check the valve clearence and test the injectors then after that it sound ok but after a week it sounds rough again so I check valve clearence again and it was ok.

The oil looks more black than last week.

I have stock injectors and I have 164000 miles on the clock.

Hans,

Welcome to the TDR from the Netherlands. :) You may have a fuel delivery problem. If you haven't replaced the fuel filter recently, do that first and check the pre screen filter too. If that does not fix it, others have said that a bad overflow valve may cause the engine to run rough. Check the archives of this site and Dave Fritz's site (he is in the "links" section) for in depth descriptions and pictures that show how to perform these tasks. Good luck.

Steve

It's very possible that you have bad supply and/or return fuel hoses. Let us know what year truck you have and maybe we can come up with more ideas.

Thanks guys for the information.

I try this weekend to fix some of yours info.

It's possible that your timing slipped. Mine slipped two weeks ago and it was VERY rough throughout the entire RPM range.

Check the small stuff first that others have mentioned. If you don't have the tools, you'll need to pay someone to check/set your timing.

Chris,

I doubt that it's timing. He mentioned in the first post that it smoothed out after he worked on it the first time. Now it's rough again.

Hans,

Most probably some sort of fuel pressure problem. In addition to the things Steve mentions, it could be the fuel solenoid not pulling all the way everytime. That's easy to check out, just push it up while it's running rough and see if that helps.

I know when I had my injectors tested the truck ran smoother and had a crisper throtle responce. After about 500 miles it is running rougher again. I wonder if were picking up some air in the fuel line. My injectors were good. My timing is under spec though. AT about 11 degrees.

I Replace the fuel filter and checked the prefilter this was ok.

But I believe it is the fuel solenoid because by cold starts I hear a ticking noise from the driverside of the engine that noise disappear after 5 minutes. So I have order a new one but that take a week for the could deliver, now my question is I have to make a trip of 1000 miles to france could that be a problem on the way. What to do if I have a problem on the way.

Hans,

It's easy to test the fuel solenoid. Just get a piece of wire and use that to secure the solenoid plunger in the up position. If the truck starts and runs ok with it wired up, then the solenoid MAY be the problem. It's more likely the fuel solenoid relay. There are two relays on the firewall near the master cylinder. One of them is the fuel solenoid relay. I can't remember which one it is and my service manual is not clear about it. Maybe someone will jump in here and tell us. This relay is a LOT cheaper than the fuel solenoid and is more likely the problem.

The fuel solenoids dont seem to go bad near as often as the relay. Also drain some fuel from the filter in a glass container and let is set for a while and look for water or trash in it. Is the engine getting up to operating temp? cold engines sometimes run rough.

OVerFlow Valve

I suggest you test your fuel pressure. Mine pressure was fine but flux badly and I did have some ruffness right at about 10 PSI of boost and ticking coming from the engine. I replaced the overflow valve and no more noise, the pressure is higher and the ruffness is gone.
