my 05 has been starting pretty rough lately. its been getting cooler, but not below freezing. kinda acts like its getting air in the fuel-stutters and stumbles until you give it a little throttle and gray smokes horribly for about 5 minutes then it clears up and runs fine. dont see any fuel leaks, fresh fuel filter

Blowinsmoke,

For what its worth, mine did the same thing. Did an Oil/Fuel/Air filter change and the cold start stumble has apparently ceased.

Air filter was pretty dirty. That may have played a part in it.

Black exhaust smoke under acceleration also greatly reduced after the "Tune Up".

Best -

There are more and more reports of rough running/cold smoke popping up around here. Issue 50 has a report by John Holmes that breifly touches on it, and, thus far, DC's unwillingness to admit to a problem. Too much idle time, not running it hard enough, low sulphur fuel, not enough additive... it's the dumb owners again.

Maybe this could be turned into an excessive emissions issue as a way to put pressure on D/C. It's pretty clear to me from reading many many threads on the subject the problem has a lot more to do with the truck than the nut behind the wheel.

As much as I don't care for EPA & CARB official types it would be nice to do a cold-start emissions demonstration in front of a few of them, that might bring about pressure on D/C to resolve the issue.

Is this a DC issue or a Cummins issue? Is Cummins building them for DC's specs. or for Cummins' spec's to meet CARB & EPA standards?

Ultimately D/C jwduke, since the ECM is theirs with their programming, and D/C is who provides the reflashes. I'm sure Cummins is involved in the programming but DaimlerChrysler has the final say.

That's a very good idea Vaughn! My '05 has started to do this too. It has 9000mi now and stock fueling, misfires on cold startup and blows white smoke... . lots of it.

mine has almost 26,000 but it has done it since i bought it new last december. couldnt really see it whitesmoke until i put the magnaflow on it
