Pulling Out Sunday

I've done both but its been a long time since I did the Moki Dugway, but best I can recall, the Moki Dugway is much easier than Shafer. Shafer is narrower, with sharper corners and is intended as a backcountry route. The Moki Dugway is considered a main route of travel with just a trailer restriction.

If you think Shafer is intimidating, you should see The Flint Trail in the Maze District of Canyonlands. I had to do multi-point turns in my RamCharger with a 106" wheelbase. It's steeper, and rougher.

As usual, it's hard to appreciate some things in a video, but this is the best I could find. The scariest parts are at 2:20 and 3:04. It was even worse with the large hood of a RamCharger, all I could see when turning the switchbacks was my hood, and the horizon.

I tried to get Ron to do Shafer trail go up the hill, Tana said no way. I took Darlene down Shafer a few years ago. She did not talk to me for a week. The tight torque convert made it a bit of a challenge with old blue.

Ron, Moki Dugway looks fairly mild. Snoking

My internet is near ZERO right now so no pics. We will be heading to Bryce canyon tomorrow on 12, looking forward to the scenery. Drove around Capitol Reef today with a small hike. Very nice but no comparison to some to the other recent places.

I think I was lucky to do the Moki road. The vid above would kill my wife for sure.

I will post more pics soon.

We did stop at the Restaurant that was suggested and had a good pulled pork sandwich.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions it really made our trip great!!!

The Sheafer trail has more, longer and tighter switchbacks but they're not that bad at all. Once down the switchbacks it is pretty much just a gravel road. Not the best not the worst but the scenery is amazing. The Flint trail is much more 4x4 even tighter turns with some nice holes to contend with. Several of the turns I had to back up at least once if not twice to make some of the turns in the truck. The approach and departure of the flint well it is over 100 miles pavement to pavement with the flint in the middle. They restrict camping in there pretty good only a few sites within that several hundred square mile area. The Moki Dugway is nothing much it is just a bit steep, the turns are not that tight except with a trailer heck pavement before and after and even some during. Nonetheless it is a dramatic road right on the face of the mesa. I like all three of them but the Flint is something you need to be prepared to do with a plan where as the other two not so much at all. It is not even so much that the Flint is so hardcore not to say that it is easy but it is just so remote.

We will stick to the basic paved and gravel roads. Wide hips are not the best for off roading.

Driving thru Bryce today then tomorrow to Vegas for a little bling.

What did you think of HWY 12 from Torrey to Bryce? Bryce is great and will be a welcome relief from the heat you have probably been in the last week.

I certainly wasn't suggesting you go into The Maze....it takes a lot of planning, time, self reliance and a good 4x4. It's not a last minute side trip. As the Park Service says....it is the most inaccessible land, managed by them, in the lower 48. I just got giddy listening to Barry talk about it, since I haven't been since 2010-ish.

I liked the drive. There were several steep up and down sections. Several places I was floored at 30mph in 2nd and I took those steep grades down in 2nd about 30mph. Does not sound too fast but I have 33K combined. Trans and cooling temps were great.

I have to say the scenery was great but not as good as I thought it would be. It was interesting driving along the top of a ridge with no shoulder on either side.

Weather is actually pretty cold in Bryce this am.

We went through there in May 2014, and thought the same. Unless you hike down in, to see it from the bottom, it's not very impressive. That's why I recommended traveling through I-70. It's hours of wonderfull sights and little stops along the way. Hope you have fun in Vegas, it's been awhile since I've been there.

Oh I know. That would be very cool in the appropriate vehicle!!!

Looking forward to the lower elevation. The Wife does not do well up this high.

Hope to see at least one maybe two shows in Vegas. Will be nice to just relax by the pool also.
