2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission routine maintenance questions

i was looking at the dodgeram.org site and noticed that i don't know anything about changing some of the fluids.



1. front and rear axle fluid. how/where does it come out? how do you get it out and what do you replace it with?



2. transfer case fluid. same questions. is this the same as the differential? i would assume so.

some help

1 Both the front and rear diff have covers that have to be pryed off to drain the oil out if oem, I think the rear one if you pull the near bottom bolt out that the oil will start to drain. Use what ever oil YOU choose with lots of advice from this site I didn't even look at the diff oil till 62k and decided it was time to change.



2 The transfer case has atf in it there is two plugs in the back left side of the case one on the bottom and the other about half way up both have allen head recessed holes like the above I didn;t look at the oil here either till (it is time to change ) fluid looked very bad and silvery.

Scott: Get yourself a service manual. It's $100 well spent if you plan to do your own work.



Here's a brief answer:



Remove covers of differentials to remove fluid. Use silicone sealant to replace cover. Replace with fluid thru the fill hole as per your owners manual.



Transfer case has both drain and fill plugs on the back. Refill with fluid as per your owners manual.



The transfer case uses ATF and the diffs use gear oil.

also, can you suggest some oils for the front and rear differential?



is this the same as the axle fluid?

is this the same as the axle fluid? Just did my rear used 85/140 I got 4 quarts and think it only took 3? till it dribbled out the plug hole- unfortunately mine has an open end so I didn't need any friction modifier.



Real good advice here Scott - Look in the back of your owners manual, find the order form for the shop manual call the number and order one. It's probably one of the best tools you will buy for your truck. Joe Mc

i looked in the back of my service manual. i found no form for a shop manual. how does a shop manual differ from a service manual? also, where else can i find a shop manual? thanks. scott.

look dude, i haven't read my service manual from cover to cover like yourself. i just asked a few questions. lighten up man. if you don't like it go to another board! i have 2 homes and my service manual happens to be in indiana. i am in florida.

Service manual is what Dodge calls the big book. Shop manual is a non-existent item whose name came from ???. I imagine they are one in the same.

I have posted a lot more than 500 times and I didnt know you had to take the covers off I thought you had to "suck" it out. So dont be such a jerk when someone wants help.

You probably have a 60 front, 70 rear. Dana stamps it on the webbing of the diff housing if i remember right. Somewhere around that big ole pumpkin a 44, 60, etc should be visible.

do most of you guys use mopar or is this one of the lubes i can buy at autozone? i think castrol makes a gear lube. what are most of you guys using?

In my 01' 2500 Auto transfer case, can i use Amsoil Sythetic "Universal" ATF?. I have alot of extra left over and figured i may as well service the Transfer case. How many quarts total are needed?, and all you have to do is take out the lower plug, let it drain, then fill it level with the top of the upper plug?, or am i missing something here?

well, i crawled under the rear..... the tag read:

it said to use limited slip diff lube only.....



on the rear cover it read:

dana 46293 2

310 5





on the front tag:

52098837

3. 54 610635



on the front housing:

on one side it read: 44880

on the other side it read: 80F



nothing real clear to me except that i have a 3. 54 and a limited slip rear.....



do i need to use an additive to the differential lube? on both the front and rear? how do i tell what axle models i have?
