How To Get Into Transporting?

Flat TV mount in trailer floppy.

I'm thinking about a trip to coastal OR and north to Seattle to enjoy the beautiful scenery and fresh seafood again. Maybe a Washington state ferry ride to Bremerton and back for old times sake. Might even continue on to the submarine base to remember my youth.

I'll be pulling my fiver and am wondering about taking old US 20 from Ontario, OR west to Corvallis, OR. I think I've traveled that route pulling a trailer but can't remember if it was a smaller cnnventional travel trailer or a large fifth wheel.

I would appreciate some advice and comments from OR residents or others familar with this route for fiver towing.

I went the other way on 126 from Florence to Boise about 4 years ago in early November. By the time I got to the 242 junction it was dark and starting to snow. I was not towing at the time but I think that road was fine. I am nit sure about 20 between that junction and Corvallis though. I have never traveled that stretch. If others say its not good you could always stay on 126 to Eugene.

You won't have any problems. Just amember there ain't much out there. If it was me,I would take 287 up to Denver, then run US 40 west to US 89N to US 30W to Pocatello then west to Ontario OR or thereabouts. I like to go places with no cell signal! I was just out at Port Angeles WA a few weeks ago. Very nice out there

Andersonville,

I reviewed a map and understand your point about taking the secondary highways but I think you meant I-70 west out of Denver, not I-40. I don't understand why you suggest taking US89N. US 89 seems to merge with I-15 at St. George, UT then follows I-15 to Brigham, UT where it runs northeasterly to someplace in WY then west to Pocatello. Am I missing something?

I meant US 40 west from Denver to US 191N then to US30w to Pocatello then west to Ontario OR where you can PU US20w. If you are pressed for time then this route will not work. Not I 40,US 40 goes thru Steamboat Springs CO and is BEAUTIFUL country. I got US 89 and 191 mixed up. Should have looked at my map first. Hope you have a nice trip.

PS. I went that way about 10 years ago. Now it could be a condo and a Starbucks around every curve so forgive me in advance if it has turned into another yuppie slum.

My apologies for misreading your post. You did say US 40 not I-40 and I thought maybe you meant US 191. I noticed it seemed to be a better choice.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll study the route you suggested. I'm not a yuppie condo and Starbucks kind of guy and your guess is probably right. CO is dominated by those folks now.

Hwy 26 across Oregon is probably more scenic than 20, particularly when you get over towards Redmond and Bend. It'd be ok for a large fiver too.

Harvey, The ferry, Seattle/Bremerton is kinda pricey if you take the fiver. 40-50 ft rig $72. 25 50-60 ft rig $86. 70 each way.

Harvey,

If I may suggest some routes from personal experience...

I-70 W from Denver into mid Utah is absolutely the most beautiful hiway I have ever been on. The road cuts thru huge mountains and then becomes purple and orange with canyons. From there, you could go N on 15 and connect with I-84W into Idaho.

You absolutely have to stop at the Woodhead Park campground Idaho Power - Rivers and Recreation - Parks and Recreation - Hells Canyon Recreation Area - Woodhead Park on the Snake River (Brownlee Reservoir) just south of the Brownlee Dam. The campground has spectacular views of Hells Canyon.

Continue on 86 to I-84 and into Portland. Stop at Multnomah Falls...

From Portland, you can continue on 26 to Cannon Beach and stop at the Cannon Beach RV Resort Northern Oregon Coast RV Lodging - Cannon Beach RV Resort in Cannon Beach, Oregon and/or stop at the Cape Kiwanda RV Resort Untitled Document. Both places are A++ with great beaches, great food and great campgrounds.

Continue N on 101 to Astoria, then E on 30 (a beautiful highway) to Ranier, OR / Longview, WA bridge onto I-5 to Seattle.

Stop at the Johnson Ridge Observatory Johnston Ridge Observatory - Mount St. Helens of Mt St Helens for a view and interpretive center you wont forget. Also, I recommend Taidnapam Park Taidnapam Park near Morton, WA if you want to stop before you get to Seattle.

Hope this helps,

Louis

P. S. I used to live in Bremerton back in 1988-89. I've been back once in 2000 and didn't recognize anything as it grew immensely in the 10+ years since I had left. You have to stop at Hood Canal for the views and scenery, its 100% more beautiful than Bremerton.

Wow! I don't want any of that! I hadn't really thought the issue through but if I go I'll plan on leaving the fiver in an RV park.

Thanks for the warning.

Louis,

Thanks for the travel guide. I have traveled much of the route you described... ... from Denver to UT, then up I-15 and across OR on I-84 many, many times as a transporter. I'll have to study a map to refresh my memory of the Olympic Peninsula. I also lived in Bremerton but it was in the early '70s. I was at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for a submarine overhaul and conversion from '71 - '73. That was before the Navy announced it's plan to build the Trident submarine base west of there. The entire area exploded with population and growth immediately following that announcement.
