Just read online about it, but I didn't see a rating. It is 15/40 yes, but is it CI4?? It also says to wait until 8-10,000 miles before using it...

Just curious as to why you would start using it and then ask questions...

The best advice I can give on oil selection is to pick one and stick with it.

most of the time i do , couldn't get any amsoil right away and my diesel guy uses royal purple , now i 'll use that 99% of the time - nothing last for ever nor do you always use the same thing , you try and do your best ...

I started using RP at the end of '04. Usually put 7500 to 10k on and dump it. The last two oil analysis came back that I could have continued to run the oil after 10,000 miles (I do change the filter at 5k when I go to 10k).

I will also run Rotella 5w40 in the winter months. If Royal Purple had a 5w40 CI4, I'd run that year round.

I have heard once you go to a oil like Royal Purple it is best to stick with it? Is this true? Where are do i go are send my oil to have it analyzed?

I have only used Royal Purple on a tired gasser delivery truck that my company owns. I will admit that it starts easier and runs smoother than it did with dyno oil. I would temper that statement by saying that I don't really drive it that much so I may be looking through "rose colored glasses"!

I don't even think it is important to stick with ONE oil, I don't have evidence to support this opinion but Amsoil says that you can mix non or part synthetic with their full synthetic without problem, but you may not get as long a change interval. So I don't think there are any compatability issues with oils that have the same API spec.

I have been using the Valvoline 5-40 full synth, I like it and at $18/gallon I think it is a reasonable bargain. I have noticed a huge difference between 15-40 and 5-40 when the temps are below 20deg F. The engine noise at start-up is much lower with 5-40 than 15-40, I have seen this with both Mobile 5-40 and Valvoline 5-40. I also change at 10k/mi with a filter change at 5k/mi.

Royal Purple

I have been using it in everything for 175k miles. go 7500 miles & change filter. go 7500 more miles, change oil & filter then repeat. :D

I buy an oil sample kit from a local Caterpillar dealer. Comes with a sample bottle, a container to put the bottle in, and a mailing label to put on the container.

Just put in the mail and a few weeks later you get a report.

A few weeks later????? That must be why I go with blackstone. I mail it off from california and it arrives 2 days later and I have my report that same day in my E-mail! Last time I took a sample on Sunday afternoon, Mailed it Monday morning and had my sample report in my E-mail by 9AM on Wed! I would never wait weeks for my results. :)

Since you already used it, I assume you already know it's a good product. I spoke with a gentleman named Jeremy at Desert Racing Concepts, and tend to respect his opinion about Royal Purple throughout the vehicle. He worked for Cummins and seemed quite informed.

Been using it for about 20000 miles. That is what Scott @ Massdiesel suggested. Also just went to RP in the transmission and diffs as well... Yea, I was also stunned that RP was not in the TDR article. Not really sure why, as Redline, Amsoil, and other synthetics were represented.

YOUR A VERY SMART GUY - I ALSO LISTEN TO SCOTT AT MASSDIESEL , HE'S A SMART GUY AND THERE ISN'T ANYTHING HE HASN'T DONE WITH A CUMMINS ENGINE - HE'S BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT - SHOULD SEE HIS NEW PAINT JOB ON THE RACE TRUCK - CAN YOU SAY " SWEET ":-laf
