I just got my truck and I think I've decided to switch to royal purple in my transmission and differential. Truck has 91k on it, is there a problem switching to synthetic now? Which Royal purple should I put in the transmission (6 spd) and how much? Also, which do I put in the rear diff (2wd) and how much? Thanks for the help.

Todd

I use Royal Purple Synchromax in my 6 spd and I do notice it shifts better. I run the 85/140 gear oil in the rear end. The 6spd takes 9. 5 pints- I "think it's 2 pints = 1 quart. Rear end Dana 80 2wd 6. 8 pints, but the 4wd version takes 10. 1 pints. I got this info out of my 2001 factory service manual.

I also run RP synchromax in my 6 speed. 5 quarts will do it, but 6 would be safe. You need a 17mm hex socket to get the fill plug out, it drains out the bottom drivers PTO cover bolt. I'd just pull it off though and clean the magnet at the bottom.

How did you get 5 or 6 qts. in the NV5600?? Did you park it on it's side or something? It only calls for 4. 25 qts. Is more recomended or better??

I just changed mine and a small amount of the 4th quart ran back out... yes it was totally drained, let it drain overnite.

There's no need to park the truck leaning to one side to help drain all the old lube out. I just used a Turkey Baster with some vacuum tubing on the end to get around the gears. Slash cut the end of the tubing so it will lay on the bottom of the transmission and that should do it. Just don't try putting it back into the kitchen drawer, you may not survive the wrath of the wife.

I'm surprised to be reading about overfilling the NV5600 since it is such a big, beefy trans. I was used to doing this with the Getrags I had in the past because they were marginal at best behind the Cummins. Is there a need to do this to the 6 speed or is this just some folks' idea of extra protection? Not judging, just curious since I will be changing my trans oil soon.
