franz tp oil bypass

I changed my oil last night with Royal Purple 15W40 synthetic and today I smell something similar to burn't oil. I checked for leaks (again) and there are none. This is my 2nd. change using Royal Purple and I don't remember the smell from the 1st change. The only thing that I notice that is differtent is 6 qt that I got and used was API CI+4 and the rest was only CH certified. is that why I get the smell now?

I have two oil changes with RP 15W-40 in the truck and haven't noticed anything objectionable. All of the bottles I have gotten have the new API rating.

However, I think we should all gang up on RP and get them to switch over to the gallon containers that Mobil Delvac 1300 comes in now. That was what I was using prior to switching over to RP and those new bottles are so user-friendly with no worries about the foil.

John

Dave,

Can you tell me more about this "LongRider" version of RP? Is this just the same oil with commercial marketing? The container looks just like the gallon containers I buy RP in now. I wasn't so much saying that RP doesn't sell the oil in gallon containers, but that the gallon containers still utilize the foil seals.

Are you saying the same thing too, that the LongRider version does not utilize a foil seal?

Just another side note, the quart containers I buy for my wife's Jeep do not utilize foil seals, just the gallon containers I buy for the truck.

The other great thing about Mobil's gallon containers is that it has a clear band down the side with hatch marks showing the quart level. That way if I want to put 11 quarts in I don't have to guess where the oil level is in the bottle.

Just thinking out loud at this point.

Thanks,

John

John,

I have only bought the 5 gallon jugs from them which had the seal although the pour spout walls are very thin and the seal removed very easily with none left on the pull up spout. The 5 gallon does not have the clear oil level marker. I understand the longrider version was developed for the long haul trucking industry for extended oil drains and yes it is purple. I haven't bought any oil for a year now and I see their oil price has increased as it was $75. 00 last time. If you want specific answers you can call them at the 800 number on the first page. Their customer service is very good last time I called. Hopefully that has not changed.

We only run Royal Purple in our race cars and the oil smells bad even going in. But I have never had an issue with it, not one single oil breakdown.

time will tell, alot of gas race cars sure are having there problems here at maryland int'l raceway!!! they blame it on the oil.

as far as the smell it was apparent for awhile with all the fluids i've used, on the diesel i think its from the oil left on the pan around the drain bolt or the breather valve. :D

The odor is a good thing, its a clue that crankcase fumes are getting into the engine compartment through the passenger air intake. Thats not suppose to happen with the hood closed and the intake at the base of the wipers.

Without the odor you wouldn't know about the leak.

Once I had learned engine compartment fumes are being pulled in I put a CO meter at the blow-by tube and while I found no dangerous levels of CO there I began to wonder what if an exhaust leak developed or worse yet stuck in traffic windows up, A/C on and the vehicle in front was a gasser with an engine miss. The huge CTD fan just sucking in super high levels of CO from the vehicle in front of me, yuck.

Here is the fix that will keep passenger air intake confined to its intended spot:

Way to go Dan!

Wade, I guess time will tell, I make more passes in a year than most, problem free. :) Most fast cars on the west are running the same oil as me without problems.
