81000 miles on the factory fluid. My NV5600 shifts fine. I think I'll just leave it alone. Jeff

Mine shifted like a pig with the factory fluid... and only slightly better with the PZ fill...

my rp came in a regular gear lube looking tall bottle with a squirter top, you must have the oil bottle looking bottles, at work i use a pump from a boat store that screws right on the bottle, it's the kind of pump like you use to put lube in a stern drive and only costs a few bucks, or you could find a top from a gear lube bottle and screw it onto your bottles

Well, based on the oil analysis, RP decided they aren't going to do anything... they recommended taking it to the dealer and having the OEM fluid put in it (on their nickle)... so I bought $100 of RP for nothing... and as I explained to them, I didn't want the OEM fluid in the transmission...

I'm going to drain the RP out this week (got to tow a load of dirt about 250 miles)... anyone have a hint on how to put the RP in the transmission since it doesn't have a squirt top... what size thread is the fill plug?? Is that standard NPT or metric (I know the hex is metric)??? I think I saw where someone screwed a street "ell" into the transmission as a fill port... any leads on that???

Any hints would be great!

Thanks in advance!

My bad... I meant what to do to put RedLine in the transmission... the synchromax is coming out... was thinking Redline and wrote RP!!

Redline uses a non-standard bottle for their oils...

i run mtl in bmw trannys (god's gift to the bmw getrag) and about the only useful info it has on the bottle is it's a gl-4 lube and talks about the harmful effects of sulfur on brass syncros, which should be a good thing on a nv4500 but from everything i see here it must be too thin for these trannys and needs to be mixed with mt 90, which seems to jive with what i've experienced with the bmw 5 speeds which can be run on atf

Preston, if you get a chance , let us know what the back of the bottle says. Went by my buddys shop, but they already threw out the empty bottles, also Redlines site does not have a clear description of what's what either.

i can't remember if the quart redline bottles have a standard thread (i usually get it by the gallon) on the tops or not, i don't think so but the pump should still work may be a little awkward just keep it upright, a short piece of fuel line jambed into the bottle may serve as a nipple if you can fine a piece that fits tightly in the bottle

I used a lube pump I picked up at Harbor Freight for about $5 to squirt in the MTL into my NV and Xfer Case.

OK, finally got time to change the RP out for some Redline MTL... the truck has been sitting since last Saturday...

The RP drained out clean this time... the magnet was covered with the typical "black dust" (which I found puzzling since it had only been about 600 miles since I cleaned it. . it had as much as the last time??). Drained it out, made sure it was completely out by allowing paper towels to soak it up as it ran in... I installed another magnet (a "super" magnet) since the factory one was almost not a magnet anymore?? The bottom of the transmission was clean, the fluid was clean... I have no explaination as to why this batch of RP started dhifting wierd like the first batch...

Installed the Redline stuff, took a drive... within 250 feet it was shifting better, better that the RP ever did... this thing simply drops into gear now... the shifter moves effortlessly (when compared to previous fluids)... and my poor little 2500 currently has about 2k pounds of misc tractor parts in it (all gravely Model L stuff!)... the transmission shifted perfectly...

I never had any noise in the transmission before, during, or after this mess... hopefully the RP didn't damage anything... I'm going to buy a set of synchronizers (to have) just in case I would ever need them... and before they get hard to find.

So hopefully this is it... I will never recommend Royal Purple to anyone after this episode and the false promises to reimburse me for the bad fluid... hopefully the redline fixes the shifting issue... I have now spent $150 in fluid for this transmission in the last week...

I have to tow about 6k worth of trailer and dirt about 250 miles this coming weekend... it will get a workout...

steved,

It's too late for you but here's how I fill my 6 speed: I remove the console/cup holder from the tranmission hump, remove the shifter from the tower and pour the oil in thru the shifter tower. I hate trying to pump oil from underneath the truck.

I still need to get the last quart (overfill) into the transmission this weekend...

I was wondering about the tower in another thread...

Guess I am one of the few here that has had good luck with RP in my NV4500. I did a little experiment for a couple of days and actually used the clutch for shifting and mine shifts fine, no noise or grinding. Shifting from 3rd to 4th the stick just fell right in, was and always has been smooth.

Just a question/observation. . Im wondering why there is no Brass count in the oil analysis (post# 41).

Took a look in my recent Blackstone Labs analysis and no brass count there either. Is it because brass isnt a basic element? Would be nice to see a brass count in a transmission oil sample to know how much syncro material is lost. (probably wouldnt give the warm & fuzzies to see the number)

Just replaced the Mopar fluid (had 40k miles on it) with PZ Syncromesh. Shifts about the same which has always been ok. Was surprised how clean the oil was coming out. If this oil holds up as well as the Mopar stuff did, i see no reason to gamble with others. At 6 bucks a quart, will consider this a flush, change it again after summer and add a filter kit. . Maybe a fast cooler.

i've got maybe 1k miles on my rp and it's shifting better then ever, guess theres no in between it's the best thing ever or absolute crap

[I'm wondering if there was enough PZ left that it had a reaction to the RP??? But how would you then get all the previous fluid out?

steved[/QUOTE]

if memory serves correctly all oils are supposed to be compatable. I know that amsoil is for sure. they even say that if you had to you could put dyno in to top off if you were not around a dealer!!
