Does anyone know if Royal Purple Synchromax is OK to use in the NV5600 transmission. I can't find the Texaco or Pennzoil products that were referred to in an article in the TDR some time back. The only reference in the owners manual specifies a Mopar part number but someone must make an equivalent that is available.

Vaughn,

Is that what you run? I notice you have the 6-speed, Do you get that growling noise when idling along in traffic around 1200 RPM?

If trans oil helps this I am going to change mine ASAP.

NV-5600 Fluid

Casey Balvert, I attended a seminar at May Madness, in Las Vegas, given by Lubrication Engineer's (Kevin Dinwittie). Obviously, He was trying to sell his products, to us, but, one of the things He emphasized was that those of us that had the NV-5600 absolutely needed to use the Mopar gear oil. He went on to say that there was a special additive in the Mopar product that no one else had. The additive was there to protect the brass and bronze in the syncro's. Penzoil now has a product that is supposed to meet the Mopar specifications(MS9224) called "Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid" stock #3501. I just bought 5 qts. (takes 9. 5 pints), from an AutoZone store, here in phoenix, AZ. , for $4. 99 a qt. I think the Mopar fluid is up near $20. 00 qt. Also, you will need a 17mm. hex-head allen wrench or socket. They are a little hard to find. Allen wrenches in the $9. 00 to $12. 00 range. I found a 3/8 drive, hex-head socket at Checker/Kragen/Schuck's, #648438 (Powerbuilt VW, BMW, Porsche, Drain Plug) for $3. 99. By the way, the Penzoil says that it is "compatible with yellow metals, such as bronze, brass and copper components" and is formulated for man. trans. requiring Chrysler part # 4874464. Hope this helps! Joe Fihn.

KBennet, no I haven't changed mine out yet, and no I do not have any rattle or transmission noises whatsoever (other than the growly sound the driveline makes below 1200 RPM while driving which is a normal drivetrain sound).

I did use Redline MTL in my 2001 with great results (Redline MTL). My '01 didn't shift that great when new and after a year or so I changed to Amsoil 5W30 in the transmission which helped some. Then I put in Redline MTL and that made quite a difference, much smoother shifts. When I drained the stock fluid it was downright filthy. I think it was around 40,000 miles. The Amsoil and MTL stayed much clearer over time. I traded off the truck at 87,000 miles.

Buffalo, when I talked to a rep at Redline I was told MTL was formulated specifically for manual transmissions requiring the weight of the NV5600 (equivalent to 30wt engine oil) and has the proper additives for the synchros. I don't know what is so "special" about the NV5600 synchros that they supposedly require an additive no one else has but I'm not buying it. I think overall since the Redline MTL is a true synthetic that overall it would have to protect better than something that is not. Also I don't consider Pennzoil in general to have good products.

Kevin D used to post on here a lot, I think LE has excellent oil that outperforms many synthetics but it's dino oil that flow poorly like dino oil in cold weather.

Guys, thanks loads. I will try Autozone in Detroit as we don't have them in Canada. I know DC says their stuff is good for the life of the truck but I feel better changing it once in a while because I tow heavy. And it looks like Royal Purple 75W140 for the rear end. Again, thanks to all those who replied.

PS. Klenger, when do you find time to camp. Keeping up that website must be a full time job. :D

Sometime I take the laptop with me and connect using my cellphone. Then I can camp and surf at the same time.

RP synchromesh claims to have additives to protect the synchros just as the mopar fluid does. I've run it in mine for the last 15k with nothing but good things to say. Perhaps next time i'll try the redline, but RP is working excellent now. My brother in law has 172k with redline MTL in his and he really hammers his pickup.

Check their website for a list of distributers.

I emailed Royal Purple today and they confirmed that their Synchromax manual transmission fluid exceeds the performance levels of Chrysler specification MS9224. It is around $7. 00 per quart so a bit more than the Pennzoil but still much less than DC. They have updated their website today in fact. So whichever is easier to get I will go with. In addition, RP also recommends 75W90 for the rear gears if you run less than 800 ft. lbs. torque and 75W140 for over that. Some objective information that might be useful.

They used to before they were bought out by Shell and the refinery in Rouseville, Pennsylvania closed down. They were one of the very best.
