I have 12 qts of Royal Purple on the way from a fellow TDR member and have used Shell Rotella T since I've had the truck. My question is, I'm thinking of switching over to RP for good, but do you guy's think that I can wait to change my oil at 7,500 miles compared to my usual 3 to 3,500 miles I do with Rotella T? I'm just worried about soot contaminating the oil and breaking it down early. I have 98,000 miles on the truck and the oil stayes pretty clear for about 1,000 miles and then it starts to turn dark, but is not bad compared to the 97 power stroke I used to have. I use Fleet Guard Filters and have never had any issues with Rotella, but I just wanted to see what ya'll had to say and see how long you guy's are waiting to change oil... . Thanks

I change the oil filter every 7500 miles and the oil and filter every 15,000. I have done oil analysis everytime and have never seen abnormal wear. I have 65,000 miles and still comes back fine. I would not worry about it. That is just my . 02 cents.

Okay thanks, I had really good luck in my 2000 Toy Tacoma Super Charged 4x4 solid axle sawp beast, but diesel is a whole a different beast.

I run regular Valvoline premium blue to 7500 miles, with a bypass filter, and haven't seen any abnormal wear numbers yet.

CHolman,

In my opinion, you're changing your oil more than you need to. My last change was with over 8300 miles on the oil. Did an oil sample test & it came back looking good, still. That was using Chevron Delo 400 & Fleetguard filters.

Regarding soot, the new CI-4+ rated motor oils are designed to suspend more soot giving you longer oil change intervals. These oils were designed to handle new diesel engines that have exhaust gas recirculation devices on them to clean up diesel emmissions(Powerstrokes & Duramaxes, etc). Fortunately, the Cummins product that we use has been able to meet the EPA standards without the EGR valve. That would lead me to believe that these newly rated oils would very easily handle the lesser amounts of soot created in our engines. However, I understand that the '04. 5, '05 & '06 Cummins engines do "blacken" the oil quicker than the earlier first generation trucks did. Probably because of the "added" injection event.

If you add performance devices that cause the engine to smoke more than stock, you may want to change the oil more frequently.

You, also, may want to go to a website entitled "bob is the oil guy.com". There is a lot of good info. regarding light duty diesel engine oils & their use.

You might also want to fill out your signature so we know what king of truck you have & it's modifications.

Good to know, thanks I apperciate it... I do have the power pup downloader and like everyone else, I love it, but I won't go past the performance mode without a new turbo... . "Don't want mine to blow apart" Can't afford that right now... I guess I should write Santa and ask him for twins... Anyway, I do smoke with it, but thanks to what ya'll have said I should be okay. Thanks
