Royal Purple

Has anyone out there tried Royal Purple synthetic oil? I found out about this oil from another board (TST) and it sounds like it's worth a try. Thought I would run it past those who have been running their Cummins for a lot longer than I have...

Been using the Royal Purple for about 2 years now. Seems to be a good oil. Noticed the dip stick went in the hole smoother after I switched. I know, thats not very scientific, but it DID feel smoother!!!

Fuel mileage stayed about the same, am changing about every 12,000 miles, replacing the filters every 2500. Engineer at Royal Purple said to run for 25 K before changing but I want to get bypass filter in first.

A retired Dow Chem. eng. and I were having dinner in Galveston one night. After his retirement, he built a big lube center and then sold it. I asked him if he had discovered any outstanding products while he had the lube center. He said he had found two. One was Energy Release and one was Royal Purple. I use both and he was not wrong.

Have been using Royal Purple 15W40 since 1996. Began using at 50,000. Truck now has 150,000. Change filter at 6000 and oil at 24,000. Normally pull oil sample at 12,000 miles and 18,000 miles. Will use RP 15W40 in new truck once miles are accumulated. My 95 will start at 25 below without the block heater plugged in. Don't know if its because of the Royal Purple, but I think it helps.

The local serious drag racers claim nothing frees up horsepower on the dyno like Royal Purple.
And while they use it in the race car,
not one of them use it in their tow vehicles. I will never understand Racers!

MGM, don't waste your time trying to understand racers - it's impossible!

Anyway, I can confirm that at least in drag racing's unlimited, normally aspirated, gasoline burning classes like Pro Stock car, Pro Stock truck, and Competition Eliminator, Royal Purple IS KING. Of course, the grade they use is about as thin as water or even thinner, but it must obviously free up a little power; and believe me, they will pay big $$$ for even tenths of a horsepower in those classes.

All of the EMD engines on the offshore drilling rigs that I work with use Royal Purple, that is where I learned of this product. The mechanics use it at home and suggested it to me. I have been using it for a little better than a year now and love it. I change every 15k, and drop the filter every 3k. Seems to be working well for me. My fuel mileage stay about the same, increased a slight bit, on long highway runs, but I don't know if the increase can be totally atributed to the oil, my fault for not having a GOOD BASE LINE!!! It is just my personal prefferance but I will stay with Royal Purple.

I like royal purple too. Are we all talking about the Long Rider? Seems like maybe they have a couple 15W-40s useable in a diesel. I will be using it as well when enough miles are on the thing. It can be hard to get, thankfully the Flying J truck stops carry it and they're close.

I had a lil Ford small block built. (dynoed @ 750hp)... . shifting at 9000 rpm. The engine builder told me to use Royal Purple or dont run the car. . JB

There are a lot more of us than I thought!! Glad to know I'm not the only one taking the changes out to 12K or farther.

If anyone reading this has ever had a problem with RP, please let us know.

I currently use RP and I will be sampling and changing my oil soon. I have about 9000 miles with one filter change and replacement of 1 qt of oil. The oil analysis (6000 miles) revealed high levels of iron (higher than normal but not through the roof, not alarming but of concern). When I change the oil I will replace with RP and send the samples off. If I get high levels of iron again I may switch brands. I'll give you the results in a few weeks. I may be waiting to long between filter changes. I also plan to sample from two diffent locations to compare the results.

I used RP in my old truck and in our current car but I never had the oil analyzed for them.

Went to royal purple site and found some prices, my calculations are over a 35,000 miles worth of oil changes i can change my regular oil 12 times and filters 12 times at a cost of $291. 36 at 3,000 mile intervals or change royal purple syntetic at 7,000 mile and filter every 3,500 mile intervals for a cost of $260. 00. I tow heavy loads and still am not sure about the long change interval at 7,000 miles will have to do some more research before i change over but i do beleave in synthetics. I grew up on a farm and change intervals were vital to keeping the tractors running stronge. Sure wish i could play in the dirt again but thats a different story for a different time.

I can't stand it! Their opinion, here's mine.
Comparing the specs on the Amsoil 15w-40 and the RP 15w-40, they are close. Amsoil is ahead on most.
However, the most important number, in my opinion, is missing on the data sheet on the their website. I had to call to get it.

Viscosity Index:
Thick when cold,thin when hot=Low VI.
Pours like honey when cold, pours like honey when hot=High VI.
A high viscosity index indicates the ability of a lubricant to provide protection over a wider temperature range.
Mineral base oils have VI's between 0 and 100. Most synthetics base fluids have VI's in the 120-150 range.
Royal Purple 15w-40 VI=130
Amsoil 15w-40=172

Cocahoe, which testing facility did you use? When I was using Red Line 15W-40 (full synthetic) in my 24v, I received data back from the lab several times in a row that I didn't like. The very next oil change interval I split the sample and sent it off to two different labs for analysis. The results were amazing! Some of the categories were very close, others were "miles" apart. #ad
Anyway, I decided to switch to Amsoil 15W-40 H/D Diesel and Marine. At the next change interval I changed again... to Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 (which I like very much).

The strange thing though... I've been a firm believer in synthetics for MANY years, trying almost every synthetic on the market although, I've never got around to trying Royal Purple. I've heard from a number of satisfied users though. #ad

I used Blackstone labs and I will be using them again for the next samples. Depending on results I may split the next time around and try another lab just for grins. #ad
The thing that bothers me about that is which one is correct?? #ad
I hate to switch around hoping to find one that sends me the results I want, when in fact the original one might be dead on.

Anyway I think it may take several samples with the same lab to get a true picture of what may be going on.

I used Blackstone for all but the analysis I split and sent to two different labs. The second lab I used was CTC. I suppose the only way to REALLY know would be to send samples to three different labs and let the majority rule. Since I switched to Amsoil I have received VERY favorable reports from Blackstone.

Your assumption of sending subsequent samples to the same lab for testing is a good idea as you are looking for a trend as well as establishing a baseline more than anything else (barring anything potentially catastrophic).

I recently heard some not-so-good things about Energy Release. Something about the additives turning to sludge - actually heard they quit using whatever it was that they were really pushing. No Bashing, just passing on what I heard from a Mechanical Reliability Engineer that's a good friend.

I personally use Mobil because we use it at our plant and the previous company I worked for used it (both major chemical companies in the Houston area). Never a problem at all according to the Mechanical Engineers.
