We have about 30 Cat 3126's in service in FL-60 and FL-80 Chassis. Only major problem we have had is drinking coolant with no definitive reason.
Our trucks are mated to an Allsion 1000 series 5 speed auto. We have finally gotten the Allsion's to last. We had some trucks that went through as manny as 3-5 transmission's in 2-3 months. Our FL-60's are equipped with a Pacbrake "retarder". This doesnt do much except make noise. However it is interfaced with transmission and will downshift when Pacbrake is activated. The FL-80's have Telma electromagnetic retarders. They work good, but they are power hungry - 200 AMPS when all four stages are activated.
The Cat is a good motor, just a little anemic. The FL-60's are detuned to 250hp/ 520 torque (due to transmission limitations). The FL-80s are mated to an Allison MD-3060P and are rated for 330hp/860 torque. I think the max Cat will sell for non-emergency service is 300hp/unsure on torque.
