This may sound stupid but what is the Max rpm on a stock 94. My truck has never gone past 2200 while driving it, even when it was brand new. Also I heard years ago that the timing was off on some of the early trucks could this be part of the problem? I have lots of questions but will start here.

Sitting still in park mine well hit about 3000-3100 rpms. Going down the road it tops out at about 2800 rpms.

Stock '94

Mine will turn about 2400 max, in neutral. It begins to de-fuel about 2000 when pulling. :{

You need to find out what wide open throttle (WOT) RPM is in park. If your truck reaches between 3000-3100 truck is reaching max throttle travel. If not, initial throttle linkage adjustment should be checked.

If you're not achieving RPM spec in park, the throttle linkage can be adjusted to achieve this. Will be more involved if you have an automatic trans.

Kitty-Cat?

Does your truck have a catalytic converter?

If so, try replacing it.

My truck had one and I replaced it and picked up 200/300RPM and 1 MPG immediately.

crabman :)

Mine is stock and will do 3200 in 4th gear, no problem.

You also might check out the fuel return valve on the P-7100 pump. Oh and welcome to the TDR, stay with us and we will get that truck running like it should. :D

Everybody Thank You! When the truck was new it only ran up to 1950-2000 (or at least as long as I can remember) while in gear, after messing with the throttle linkage I now get up to 2200 (no power at this RPM), in park it might hit 2300-2350 max and smokes bad at that. Never had a cat converter. I don't think it has ever been right. Av8r truck sounds like mine

What color is the smoke? If it's white/blue then it won't hurt a thing to have the timing bumped up a bit.

Mike

Smoke is white/blue if I recall I will check this morning

SSkinner what is involved if WOT is only 2300ish do I have to mess with the Govener or what.

My timing was off when I checked it. Should have been 12. 5 but checked out at 11. 5. I increased it to 15* and later installed the 3K gsk which made a big difference in being able to make over 3000.

The plate you have and proper adjustments do make a difference in being able to get the rev's up. For example, if you have a #10 plate and the governor arm is set too low, you can't get past the de-fueling point of the plate.

Find out what plate you are using and check the governor arm adjustment as shown in the technical section of Peirs web site.

Messed with linkage and gained a couple hundred :) Went to the peirs site and checked out what Howard said, maybe this weekend I will get a chance to pull it in the shop and work on it. I need to do the timing and the KDP, can somebody tell me a good place to buy the timing tools and what they should cost OR a good person or shop in Michigan to have it done, I am sure I can handle it, but most of you out there Know more about it than I do ;)

timing tools

The timing tools are a couple hundred dollars, and you only need to use them once.

While the timing is being done, you should pull the front cover and peen the Killer dowel pin, and loctite the bolts while you are doing the timing.

Send me a PM if you want help or for an estimate for the job.

Setting the timing alone may give you few hundred more RPM, but to really make the truck run good I'd install a set of 3000rpm governor springs. This will really wake up the engine.

Let me know if I can help.

i got a better idea. try replacing the cat with a strait pipe. :D

sskinner Yes I have a little. I have a #6 plate the governor arm is at the point of the first hump on the bottom, from what I read this might be a little high. I adjusted the linkage until it started to bring the idle up and I can now get about 2600 under power and 3000 in park also slid the plate ahead a little (toward front of truck) but didn't seem to make much difference. Anything above 2300 or so seems to be weak as I guess that is the de-fueling. I am still trying to get a day that works for lsfarm and my self to set the timing. Most of my maint stuff is done now KDP is tabbed, ect.

Thanks for the reply :)
