Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Rubber boot next to my afc housing?

While adjusting my idle speed today I noticed that the rubber boot just to the drivers side of my AFC housing is almost totally gone. There "feels" like a spring inside the rubber boot and it has an electrical connection plugged into the top of it.

What is it and do I need to be concerened about replacing the boot or the entire _______?

After further investigation it appears that this is my fuel shut off solenoid. Still don't know about the importance of the rubber boot?

With the boot torn up or gone water and crud can get inside the solenoid and cause it to stick. This results in no start, no stop or not all the way on = no power. It's just a matter of time. You can buy a new boot from Cummins or make your own out of a section of bicycle innertube and a couple of cable ties.

Thanks Bill - I guess I can take it off the truck and clean it out b4 rigging a "custom" boot and reinstalling it? How difficult is it to remove?

Pretty easy, 2 bolts and a spring clip and disconnect the wiring. The bicycle inner tube works great
