It seems that a lot of people think it was put on to make an oily mess out of everthing in the airstream on the pickup behind it. Actually your "guess" about the breather hose is correct. It vents excess crankcase pressure (also known as blow-by) to the atmosphere instead of building up pressure in the engine and eventually blowing out seals or gaskets to accomplish the same thing.

Dodgeboy, get a plastic bottle, with cap, 2" in dia. or so, put a hole in the cap to fit snug on the tube, place the cap on tube, put a wire (3/32" or so) through the tube so the cap cant come off. Put a row of holes near the top of bottle screw it on. NO MORE MESS! The wire should fit in the mouth of the bottle.

The bottle is about the size of a medium vitamin bottle. I get about 1/2" of oil in it every 3000 miles.

Dodgeboy, I see you got a #8 (230/605) plate in yours... . like it? do ya tow? Hows your MPG? Mines coming as we write!

DodgeBoy, not a bad question especially if you are new to diesels. On a gasser the blowby goes through your PCV valve into the air intake. Can't do that on a turbo diesel without making a cooked oily mess out of the turbo. You can't vent the blowby into the downstream side of the turbo due to the boost pressure being higher than the blowby pressure. I've worked on some non-turbo diesels where the blowby is vented into the air intake, makes for a mess.

I Love it!!!!!!!

'956Wheel---Yes, i really like my #8... ... Installed it about 2 months ago... I get anywhere between 18-21. 5mpg..... my last two tanks i have got 21. 5mpg... I am also using stanadyn in the fuel.....

illflem---What is the theory about removing the oil filler cap with engine running and the heat/smoke coming out of it, if it is to much i had a guy tell me that means you have oil leaking past your rings i believe he said, he also said if you pull the dip stick out a little ways and alot of smoke/heat comes out of there it means the same thing? He was looking at a 96' CTD the other day and and the breather hose underneath had alot of what he called smoke coming out of it... . i tried to tell him that all out trucks have that and it is not smoke it is just heat from the oil coming out... . Does all that sound right?????

Jason, the fellow you talked to was right, excess pressure in the under the valve cover can indicate a bad ring or valve. In fact one of the recommended tests to check for this on a Mercedes diesel is to put a pressure gauge to the blowby.
