Origin of weird sayings?

If I trade my truck in on a new one in another state, what happens tax-wise? Do I pay sales tax there, or in my own state? Are there any penalty taxes or something else levied against me? I just think I'd get a better deal out of my area. Thanks.

Brian, I don't know how it works where you are but when I bought my 2500 in Oregon there was no sales tax, when I registered it in WA I had to pay over $3000 in sales tax:eek: I was told that if I bought it in Calif I would have to pay sales tax in Calif at the time of sale then again in WA when it was registered:eek:  I'd advise you to check it out well, you might be better off keeping the money in your home state.

I purchase my truck in Idaho and I live in Nevada. They dealer in Idaho, collected my sales tax for Nevada (and supposedly sent it to Nevada for me). If it is not collected at the time of purchase, you will have to pay it when you register the truck. It is a one time fee. You will not pay it twice.

I think you have to check with both the state you buy in as well as where you are going to register. I bought mine in Oklahoma, traded the old one in and kept my tags, the new one had OK. temporary tags to come home. Paid no tax to OK. I registered it here in Maryland and had to pay our 5% tax. Md collects tax at the time of registration regardless of what may have been paid elsewhere.

another thing to watch is lemon law rules... In Texas, lemon law is only applicable to vehicles purchased in Tx... so, if you have a problem, you may have to deal with it in another state

Check ahead of time!

This has been a few years ago so if it has changed or my memory is fuzzy someone correct me.

I bought my truuck in Tx when I was in Grad. School in Huntsville. I paid state tax at time of purchase, about 5%-6%. I live in Louisiana and registered it here. Our taxes are divided between state and parish (county), which totals 8 1/2%. The state taxes from Tx transfered to the state taxes for La, but not the parish. There was about a 2% ($500) difference that is lost when it crosses the state line. The salesman was telling me about this before I bought my truck. Apparently a couple from louisiana had bought a truck a few years earlier and tried to get their lost money back. He was a lawyer and she worked in the parish court house and they couldn't find where it went either!

If you are buying new just ask for a "Certifcate of Orgin" from the dealer you are buying from. This replaces the title, and once you get back to your home state go the the DMV and register the truck. You will be issued a Title from your state. Just be sure you get a temp. permit if you plan on driving it back.

I did this when I lived in Alaska and bought my truck in Nevada. I did not have to pay Nv. sales tax this way. Just ask the dealer where you are buying it from what you plan to do.

Unless it is a dealer-to-dealer purchase, California WILL get you.

They charge tax on the sale, whether you license in it CA or not.

There may be other states like that, not sure... but CA definitely is.
