Rumble Strip Sounding Vibration When Starting Off

My 2004 Ram 3500, 4wd, 120k miles, has started a vibration just as it starts moving. It is more pronounced when pulling my 5th wheel, and when turning left. It sounds and feels like the tires are running over rumble strips. The vibration/noise disappears very quickly, probably by the time the truck is going 10 mph.



Any thoughts as to what it could be? U-Joints, bearings, other issues?

Mine's doing the same thing, just started with the new Toyo MT's. But I suspect U-Joints.

It sounds like a common problem that results from heavy loading on the rear axle depressing rear springs and putting the driveshaft universal joints in a bind. Air bags, Timbrens, or other aftermarket devices that improve rear end support may help.

Could also be an indication of a binding u-joint that requires replacement.

If it's a LWB check the driveshaft support carrier bearing too. Very common problem.

I did just install air bags on it. It rides level pulling the 5th wheel.

If you want to end those problems once and for all, go for a 1 piece drive shaft.

Prairie Dog where did you get the driveshaft or do you have the G56 transmission? I can't find a one piece for my 03 because it is the NV 5600.

I had to buy the one for an 08 mega Cab G56 from Dodge ( p/n 52123122AA $600) and have it shortened 1. 5" and re-balanced ($150). I think I actually ended up with a better product because the shaft was balanced better than Dodge cared to do it.

Only optional W/O custom build shaft for MT/03-04,If the joints check out its may be related to Pinion bearing failure.
