Hi Guys,

I did't have the noise until I changed the front brake pads yesterday. Installed new slider bushings and lubed them well. Rotors were not bad so I did't have them turned.

A right hand turn will make a low pitched grumbling/rubbing noise.

I jacked up the front end and could't find anything loose. Front axle U-joints are tight. All the steering linkage & ball joints are tight. Calipers are torqued to 38 ft lbs. I cant duplicate the noise in the driveway with wheel turned to the right on the jack. I don't get any bearing noise spinning the wheels.

Could the new pads be contacting the lip on the rotor that is not used (rusty edge) around a corner? Something would have to flex?

Update

When the front brakes warm up I am getting a drone from one side. I can feel it through the floor boards. When driving and apply the brakes, then let up, I get the drone. Touch the brake, and the drone goes away. Caliper does not seem frozen. I can't feel any drag even with the drone, engine off, coasting to a stop.

I have about 5 miles on the pads. I have made some hard stops to seat the pads. These are not freshly cut rotors either. One side is glazed... . to a mirror finish.

Using old rotors

When I worked as a mechanic, and just changed brake pads on a customer vehicle, I always told the customer of possible noise issues like you are experiencing.

What you might try is to remove the caliper, and put a layer of silicone sealant, or silicone glue on the brake pad where the piston touches and where the caliper 'fingers' touch the other brake pad.

What this does is to fasten or glue the pad to the more solid caliper and keep the pad from touching the rough, slightly irregular disc and vibrating. Which is what you are hearing. When you touch the brakes, this clamps the pad to the rotor, and stops the vibrating, hence the noise.

I had pretty good luck with this procedure, if it doesn't fix the noise, you will have to either turn or replace the rotors.

Hope this helps, Greg L the Noise Nazi

Since I'm hearing impaired and therefore immune to some of the noises you guys talk about. . won't the noise like you're suggesting, caused by pads that hit high parts on the rotors, go away after they wear in?

brake noise

I have been having the same problem with my brakes. When I replaced the pads on one side while driving slow I get a very weird drone noise that can bee felt through the floor board. The brakes quit making the noise as soon as the brakes are applied. This noise is very annoying, any ideas?:(

Thanks for the info. That's exactly was is happening. I pulled the caliper off and sanded the rotor (waste of time). The new pads are only hitting on the top half. The rotor must have pretty good taper in it. I ran Ferredo Pads for about 60K. Sam Memello put them on "Midnite" a few years ago on the Shadetree Mechanic. They stopped good, but apperantly were tough on the rotors.

azgearpro,

You are probably having the same problem as me. The best fix is have your rotors turned or get new ones. Autozone has them for $44. Probably not real high quality, but I don't tow of haul and have the 1 ton cylinders in back. I figure they can't be too bad if they are D. O. T approved for an 8800 gvw truck.

Glad to be a help

Hemi: Glad I was some help, too bad the fix is the more expensive one, but with new rotors installed, you will have 100% brakes when you are done.

Best of luck, Greg L

When I changed the brakes I purchased from Sam, I had the rotors changed. The weird thing is the brakes work fine, and they don't pulsate when I apply them.

This weekend Fred Swanson and I are going to put the truck on the his lift and figure the problem out, he is very good at trouble shooting.
