Was at a friends house this week and was talking about retirement for me in a couple years, and that a 2018 or 19 might be a retirement gift for me. He says that Cummins lost the contract with RAM. We didn't argue about. But I said that would be the death of RAM if that happened. I sure hope not. If so I guess I'll drive my 04 until..........

I commented about this a while ago. I'm pretty up on AG construction and heavy industry trends. I did witness the transformation of Case when it was owned by Tenneco to FPT (Fiat). Case is the reason we even have a Cummins B engine, and after FPT gets any company, they put in their own engine. Damiler does the same thing, witness Freightliner. It was safe to see a CAT 3126 or Cummins B or C engine in any mid line FL. Nowadays, you'll see nothing but a Detroit of MB engine. Open any engine bay of a Case or New Holland machine and you'll see a FPT engine.
I just knew Fiat would buy out VM and add it to their collection. I know FPT already makes an engine similar to our Cummins 6.7. It just makes business sense.
See for yourself.

I can't see RAM dropping Cummins. They've built the brand over the past 25 years, and with GM married to Isuzu and Ford rolling their own diesels, seems to me the Cummins/RAM brand is more valuable than ever. JMHO- your mileage may vary.

There have been rumours around for years ever since MB bought Dodge way back when. Anything is possible but don't get excited. Remember all the stories about Furd owning Cummins. It was NEVER true. Of course it makes business sense to use your own engine but they all know Cummins is what keeps Dodge trucks selling, over 2 million a long time ago. David

There was a discussion about this possibility several months ago. The Fiat engine you show with a similar displacement is way short of the output of the current Cummins in a Ram truck. Convert the figures from kw to hp. and torque from Nm to lbs./ft. and you will see the power output is inadequate unless big changes are made.

Didn't you guys know that Ford own Cummins anyway :D

Bill, not long ago, we had in a Case 540 and we had a contest of us truck geeks in the shop of who could ID the engine- we had to order a sender for it. We all knew a 4B SHOULD be in there but it wasn't. It looked awful close then someone spotted IVECO cast into a cover. The emission label was gone. It is a ringer for an ISB with it's size and rear gear train etc. I'm sure they can tune the FPT 6.7 to run with the big dogs.
In comparison, I wonder how loyal Case owners reacted to the loss of Cummins in that machine? How ironic is it that you're most likely to find a Cummins engine in an imported piece like Kawasaki or Komatsu?

I spent over 30 years in the business of selling and servicing Cummins engines beginning in the days of the old NH250. My allegiance is with Cummins, not Chrysler. RAM, or Fiat/Iveco. I'll go where Cummins goes.:D

Bill

As only being a consumer when it comes to D/C, and not involved in sales or repairing (except DIY) cummins. IMHO, it will be the death of Dodge if they get away from Cummins diesels for the HD line. Their is a reason Fiat is at the bottom of reliability here in the US. When I was in Europe for 5 years back in the late 70's early 80's Fiat was like AMC here in the US. With the 1500's & Fiat diesel's now being used, is a big test trial for our beloved Dodge trucks. I have owned every generation of Dodge trucks since the early 70's, except for the 1st Gen, but I worked on those in the army and was responsible for a fleet of them in the 190th maintenenance Co. at Fort Hood Tx. I have been a Loyal fan of Dodge trucks, and if they get away from Cummins, well let's just say I'll be to old anyway to drive one.

Well guess everyone has their thoughts, but I'll be like B. Stockard, going where the 6BT goes. I have had 1 1st gen and 2 3rd gen and I don't see me going anywhere else. My parents worked for GM and I can get one hell of a deal through GM because of that. But I perfer what I drive now. I remember the stories about Ford owning Cummins and all the other BS. But I don't see this marriage being split up. Between Cummins and RAM that is a lot of $$$$$$

I could see an FPT engine in the 4500/5500 series, where the brand of engine is not that important, but it should remain the engine of choice in the PU.

With a complete line of trucks passing the J-2807 SAE test, I don't think there is any way RAM will jeopardize that with a change in engine, while the competition is blowing bubbles to catch up.

You do have to wonder if the 1500 "eco Diesel" is a test to see if anyone cares WHO makes the engine. It wont be a simple decision, I am SURE the Italians are all for there in house engines, and I am sure the most of the RAM higher ups know that there will be a loss of customers if Cummins goes away. I bet it will really come down to $$$$$$. If Cummins can supply The engine cheaper than Fiat can build in house they will stay. I would hate to be in the shoes of the contract negotiator for Cummins, charge enough to make a profit yet cheap enough to keep the contract. Anyone know for SURE when the current Cummins/Ram contract is up? I will also be that if ram does do away with the Cummins that Nissan will make a full size truck to utilize the Cummins. I don't know if he is still there but one if the heads of Dodge trucks left for Nissan North America a few years ago. He KNOWS that he can sell full size trucks in America with the Cummins engine in it

I'd buy one. I bought a Frontier new in 2010 & really like it. A Nissan/Cummins would be a great truck.

Don't hold your breath on seeing an ISB in a Nissan. They would have to come out with a whole new HD truck for that one. The Titan is lackluster at best, and a poor seller. Would you want to beta test a whole new platform? Not me.

If Nissan wanted to build a 1 ton duallie truck for the American market, I do not think they will have a problem do it! SNOKING

OK, I've been holding off, but ....
