You all underestimate the Diesel Knowledge of FPT. They are Eye to Eye with Cummins.

What he said^^^

People on this forum are only a small percentage of RAM owners. Did a RV trip with a friend that has a Class C RV on Sprinter Freightliner chassis with V6 Diesel (similar to the one in the 1500) that gets 15MPG and pulled all the passes in Washington just fine!

When they think they have it figured out they will switch to their own diesel. Then maybe Ford will buy Cummins~~~~~~

The sprinter uses an mb engine 5or 6 cyl depending on year irrc. They had way more than their share of issues imho.I think if they were all that there would have been many more sold here in the states. In 08 when the dealers were being shut down they were stuck holding hundreds they could not dump no matter the discounts offered.

Strange critters with expensive parts. We were passed over at the last minute as a dealer for the Freightliner Sprinter and ain't I happy about that....Fuel and oil filters are pricey and it gets worse from there.

I still feel Ram made a horrible mistake passing on the V-6 Cummins back along. Can't help it, that's how I feel.
I am very pleased that the 1/2 ton diesel market is alive and kicking again from Ram's efforts BUT it should have been a Cummins powerplant. The parts pricing and availabilty once these are out of warranty will be OEM only.
Higher costs and held hostage by a single source.

Sprinter is not my fav to work on. A fuel filter change on the V6 is rediculous!

With a factory set up to build plenty of engines I am SURE Cummins would be out looking fir another place to put them. With the smaller C going in both the Toyota and Nissan I am sure there will be some talk about the larger engine. I do not know how much longer the current contract is good for, anyone know for sure?

I have to agree. A 1/2 ton Ram without a Cummins motor is the number one reason why I'll never buy one.

I had one of the last Iveco's sold in the US (just before they bailed out of the US market). It was a 12-14 with a Torqueflite automatic, and the six-cylinder Fiat engine. I don't recall its exact model #, but it was the equivalent of a 6B Cummins. While not as smooth or powerful as the B, it performed without incident for 17 years. The rest of the truck, not so much.

Ozy, I believe you have an advantage over us in that regard. Of course this is Cummins territory, and we would be slow to adapt to the change I think, possibly waiting and watching, just as some are doing on the Ecodiesel. Ram, if they go in this direction will have a problem selling the program to us diehards because there is more loyalty to Cummins than the Ram truck, at least on this forum.

I read a great article in the ISV in Diesel Power. Cummins said pretty plainly that the ISV is all theirs, and they are looking to play ball with whoever. I think even UPS was getting some. The Ram/ Cummins thing is totally different AFAIK. Ozzy, I don't underestimate the FPT. We have doosan loaders with doosan engines (I think Ricardo design) and they are holding up pretty well. None of us thought they'd do as good.

i can't help but recall the string of disasters from imported Diesel engines over the years in the Class 5 - 8 truck markets. We demand more from our engines as a nation.

We also have a tendency to ignore preventative maintenance suggested by the OEM. Domestic engines are far more forgiving of that than the imported stuff.

Many overseas OEM's can not understand why we would not half dismantle an engine at a specific time to do the suggested repairs. If it is still running great why mess with it is our mantra.

Daimler had to give up and purchase Detroit Diesel in order to create a global engine that would hold up. They needed the US engineering. I wish that they held the same regard for our parts look up, instead of the bizarre prone to error format used now.

Mike.

Yep, and one of those disasters was Iveco and why I don't get very excited about anything with the Iveco name on it. Also our trucks run over much greater distances than their European counterparts since geographically the US is much larger .

As noted prior, they are good engines, but can't get out of their own way, I always hated getting stuck behind one on a two way HWY , they were the last to climb a grade and the first to the top of the summit.
