Another Ford Owns Cummins

NEW DIESEL... please help

When a big engine runs away like that, how fast is she spinning? do the bottom ends ever let go? I have seen a few 6-71's go, and boy do they scream!

There is overspeed protection that keeps the engine from running to fast. Not sure what that one was turning when it went though. Most locos idle at around 300rpm and at full throttle I believe they get up to around 900 maybe 1000 rpms. One night at work we were switching some cars out of track when the engine blew. Scared me to death, there was a loud boom then you could hear parts hitting the engine covers. Turned out that one cylinder threw a rod. The connecting rod came out the side of the motor taking the acces cover with it as well as a piece of the block not to mention blowing the doors on the engine shroud open and oil going everywhere.

They did tell us that the overspeed limiter failed allowing the engine to self destruct. Seems to me that anything above 1100 rpm's will take one down, not sure though.

The side plates you refer to on UP 844 are actually very funtional. They are called smoke lifters, and do just that to help keep the cab more smoke free.

I had no idea. Still think the locomotives look better without them.

Those smoke lifters, also called elephant ears, are esthetically interesting I guess you could say. I live just outside Omaha, and have seen both UP 844, and UP 3985 in motion. The 3985 is the big 4-6-6-4 articulated shown earlier in the thread. Its just such a treat that UP continues to run them. FYI, if you are anywhere near Cheyenne, WY, that is where those two steamers live. The folks there don't mind at all if you drive to the shop to visit them and the locomotives. The building is a partial round house in the middle of their yard there. I have been twice, and am going to stop by again in a few weeks.

A very common way of making 'Big Smoke' with a steam engine was to throw a shovel full of sand into the fire box during times of high draft. The sand would knock quite a bit of soot off the fire tubes yielding a really big plume. Anybody want to try that on a sled puller?

GE has effectively kicked EMD's butt in the current marketplace, but think back to the late U Boats when one of the most common comments in the northeast was 'GE should stick to making toasters. ' Come to think about it, looking at the first few photos, I guess they have! :-laf

Most of your newer GE's have an engine monitor screen which shows pretty much everything the motor's doing. They top out at around 1050 rev's or so. The new ES44DC's have a real nice fully electronic V12 that makes some fine music. I think the 2 stroke EMD's rev a little higher. And yes about CSX-sucks.com-----you don't have to work for the railroad long to figure out why they have unions out here. It can be downright unbelieveable sometimes.

For anyone interested-----www.utu.org

the emd 710 engines turn 900 to 950 rpm in locomotive application [sd/gp60, sd70, 75]

the new ge es44dc's are nice. .

the emd mechanical governed engines have a nice mechanical overspeed trip on them. it jams the fuel injectors down so they can't fire anymore. . so as long as it doesn't start running on crankcase oil, it will die at between 875 to 1000rpm [depending on engine & governor rating] the ge mechanical engines have an overspeed mechanism too, but it doesn't work as well. . if something mechanically jams the racks it can't return the racks on the pumps [but if one rack on the pump sticks, the rest can still return to no fuel]

When a big engine runs away like that, how fast is she spinning? do the bottom ends ever let go?

the mains usually are ok after an overspeed and failure. . the rods can let go though. .

I've seen some blown FL series GE engines come through on a consist or two. It can sure do some damage when a rod goes on one of 'em! I'll be dog----I woulda thought a 2 stroke EMD would'a rev'd higher than that. We do still get an SD-90MAC through here every once in a while. The 4 stroke "H" engine is a fine looking and sounding piece. Has EMD done anything else with that engine lately?

nah, that is sitting on something smaller. .

here is a pic of one sitting on a 4ft pallet

i've got sitting in the garage a piston and art rod [the short stubby rod in the picture] along with a couple of cam gears. the cam gears i have plans for [one already in use as a base/pedistal for bench grinder] the piston will just be cleaned up and be added to my junk pile

i've never yet seen a 265H emd engine come through my yard. . i though i caught one a few weeks back but it was a UP sd9043. . 710 repowered and in that same consist was a UP AC6000 that was repowered with a fdl diesel. . i did catch a csxt ac6000. . that hdl engine is impressive sounding at idle and under load. .

Yeah, I think the engines in the AC6000's are actually made by Deutz. They have a turbo for each bank of 8 cylinders. We see a lot of UP engines across the Gulf road. We (CSX) swap with them everyday. CSX uses way more GE's than UP. I have run two "H" engined UP SD90's as leads. They are impressive and EMD's are typically a better riding and more refined "jack". The newer GE's like the ES44DC are also very nice and very refined, with an excellent ride.
