Okay guys my Dad (Jack In Alaska)is in a bind as his truck has gone insane. While driving down the road pulling his fifth wheel tralier with the cruise control on the truck will take off, peddle goes to the floor and the truck will not stop. The only way he has found to stop the truck is to turn it off (YIKES at 65 mph and no brakes). This has happened three times now, you can read about the first time here: www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum4/HTML/004398.html The second and third times were just the other day while he was traveling in Mexico. Like it says in the other post nothing seems to stop it, even turning the truck off and back on does not help.
He is now back in the US in the Yuma, AZ area. Does any one have any idea what is wrong with his truck?? He is getting ready to drive back to Alaska and needs to get this fixxed soon. The last dealer he went to (sorry I forget the name and place) could find nothing wrong. The dealer here in Alaska thought it was a TPS sensor problem and mailed him a TPS to have installed but unfortunately it was a tps for an auto and Dad has a 5 speed.
What I need are ideas for the dealer to look for, and the name of a good dealer who will find the problem between Yuma and Seattle. If any one has any ideas post them here or e-mail me. Thanks in advance.

I may be stupid, but if the truck is running away, with the trailer-and its a 5 speed, just slip it into neatral, and safely pull off the road-with it screaming-its governed, shouldnt hurt it a bit, unless it is truely running away on oil from blown turbo or some other source, then it will blow-but that doesnt sound like the case here. Good luck finding problem.

I would take a peek at that HX40 you are running ... . make sure no oil leaks are in that area (also pull the intake hose check those fins) other than that...

I have had a runaway truck too. I had a bad cruise control servo, and a tap of the brakes would stop it. You may want to look into the vacuum system at the cruise control. It might be putting full vacuum on the servo and not letting the vacuum off when he hits the brakes. That is the only thing I can think of that might do what you have described.

JR2, there is an easy way to disconnect the cruise control so it is impossible to cause this problem until it gets remedied. Take the cover of the TPS (where the throttle connects to the engine above the injection pump) and disconnect the small cable going to the throttle mechanism. This is what operates the throttle for the cruise control. If it still takes off then you have a serious ploblem as its likely the turbo feeding it oil like ToolMan suggested.

So John, it only happens with the cruise on? Sounds like he should just get the truck back to AK without the aid of cruise.

It seems to me that if it only happens with the cruise on then you can rule out a leaky oil seal on the turbo.

I've already replaced my TPS to correct a irratic idle problem.

Well let me try to respond to some of these, I don't think that its the turbo leaking oil because this would not make the peddle inside the cab go to the floor?? As for just pushing the clutch in, he did that and when the truck hit 3500 RPM he let it back out, said it sounded like it was going to keep going.
Toolman - its on my dads truck - not mine. . he is bone stock.
Lsmith - hitting the brakes does nothing, even turning off the cruise does nothing, but I think you may be right, it has to be a cruise problem.
Vaughn and HVAC - I just called him and suggested that he disconnect the cruise and of course he said there was no way he was driving from Yuma to Anchorage with out cruise. I will hae to yell at him some more this evening, but that is my suggestion.

Thanks for the help guys, if anyone else has ever had this problem let me know.

I have seen a couple vehicles that the cruise do the same thing. One had a bad servo that was coming apart (loose) internally and the other was the cruise system wiring was rubbing on some part of the body and grounding the accel circuit. This was fixed in the DC dealer shop where I work. Just thought I would add this so if your dad got to a decent dealer they may look at those two areas.
