Anyone know how I can get out of my truck and lock the doors with the engine running so I can go into stores, etc? I tried the key fob but it won't lock if running. Short of carrying an extra key I was hoping someone knew if I could set the key fob to allow that. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Tim

Mine will lock with the key fob. I don't know how to set it that way it has always just worked, so it is possible.

Good luck,

Kevin

Yeah man. . I can lock mine with the fob while it's running. Do it all the time. Didn't have to do anything to make it work... just always has.

Check the Service Manual if you've got one. Might give some insight.

Mine is the same, I can lock it with the key fob only. kind of a nice safety feature, probally helps alot of people from getting locked out.

Doors lock

Dealer can program it for passive/active mode. for safety reasons I would recommend a auto start that way you can have a valet mode that will allow you to exist the vehicle with keys.

Don't know how long you'd want to run the engine, but you could get a "cool-down timer" which would run your engine up to 6 minutes, or a "Diesel Turbo Lifesaver" which would run your engine up to 240 minutes. I know the cool-down timer works on the 3rd gen trucks, not sure of the diesel turbo lifesaver.

With either, you can take your keys with you and lock the truck with it running.

take care,

Casey

this does not apply to the thread but is something to think about, if you leave your truck running with the keys in it and if someone steals it with the keys in it you would probably have a hard time for the insurance to cover it even if it was locked. just my thinking ( i do lock my door with the key fob and leave the key in it with it running sometimes also)

I have wondered if this works too and will give it a shot. I sometimes want to leave the truck locked and running so the A/C can be on for my dog.

GregDoerfler - would you really tell the insurance company you had the key in it when it got stolen?

I also, like the others can use the fob to lock the doors while truck is running, only about three blocks from the driveway is the local caffine fueling station. In there, and out in a couple of minutes. Might won't to also cosider hiding a extra key, I thought about when that fob's battery bite's the dust "then what":--)

You don't think it would be obvious to the cops if they do find it? I see lot's of guys talking about this and no one seems to mention that it is illegal to leave a vehicle idling unattended. A friend of mine got a verbal warning from a cop when he left his truck running and entered a store. Probably not enforced that much fortunately.

Tony T, that very thing about the battery in the fob going out happened to a buddy and I about 2 & 1/2 years ago. We were in his 99 Dodge one ton, 2nd gen Cummins, it was a hot as h*#l July or August Saturday, and we were going to go into a Home Depot to get some item we needed to fix something, and he says we will leave the truck running so it will be cool when we come back, sounds like a plan to me. ! Got back to the truck in a couple of minutes, and low and behold, the key fob would not open up the door. Home Depot does not sell that size battery, surprise! He had to call his wife to come and get us, take us to Wally World camera department, get a battery, go back to the parking lot and open the door. Whole thing took a little longer than an hour, but the cab was cool! FWIW.

I had my dealer make a couple of non-encoded keys for locking/unlocking the doors. When traveling in the camper, I carry a spare in my pocket. Rotate the lock once to the right and all doors lock. Rotate the key once to the left unlocks the driver door, twice to the left unlocks all doors.

About the only time I lock the doors while the engine is running is at rest stops to go back in the camper to take a whiz.

At first I thought the doors didn't lock either, but rather they locked but did not make the chirp sound.

It is not practical for us to not let our Ram warm up given our situation, and it is actually a ticketable offense where we live.

We warm it up when necessary and will probably continue to do so, carry a spare Blank key in case the Fob Fails, and have spare batteries in the cubby to take care of the double level security system which will surely sound by entering in that manner.

I have a dog. I roll down the windows if she's inside (winter or summer) and leave it off. (usually she's in the back, though) She's a dog for Pete's sake. Dogs don't need heat or AC. JUST LEAVE THE WINDOWS DOWN! I've had people who parked next to me affraid to get in their car until I came back out so I take her with me less often. Probably a few who crapped their pants that I never met. When she's in there, the key is off but in the ignition.

If she's not with me and it's hot, I leave the winows open an inch or 2. Plenty of ventilation to keep it cooler and inconvenient to get into. (of course not impossible)

I only leave it running if it's a real quick stop. (like buying a paper)

Whattsa fob? Mine didn't come with one, checked, too expensive to retrofit. Run with no less than 3 keys, truck runs 10 hours most days. Leave it idling more than most. Once in Primm Nevada, all three keys hanging from the running truck ignition, course the door was locked.

Cheers,

Steve J.

Those are state laws. What's illegal in your state may not be in mine.
