Details in Fatal Montana Grizzly Bear Shooting Emerge
SEELEY LAKE- Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials say that the Missoula man who shot a grizzly bear near Seeley Lake acted in self-defense, so he will not face any charges.
The incident happened Sunday around Noon in the Blackfoot-Clearwater Wildlife Management Area when a man hunting for antlers came across a 4-year-old grizzly and her two cubs.
The man fired a shot but the bear kept coming at him, so he fired again according to FWP. The second shot wounded the bear enough that it fell over, allowing the man to run to his truck and call for help.
“He was faced with a very difficult situation and I think he did what he had to do to protect his life. Unfortunately he was put in the situation that’s a very scary situation for everybody, but he was lucky to get the shots and defer the bear enough, to wound it enough, that he was able to get away,” said FWP Information Education Manager, Vivaca Crowser.
Witnesses who were also in the area looking for antlers confirmed his story and FWP game wardens and wildlife biologists investigated the incident, determining that it was in fact, self defense.
Crowser says the incident serves as a reminder that spring is here and bears are out there. She says it’s important to have a plan in case you come across one, always carry bear spray, and have it accessible. SO YOU CAN SPRAY IN YOUR EYES AND YOU CANT AND DONT WANT TO SEE WHAT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN
