Seems that Mr. Law dog doesn't like my "smooth flow" exhaust... that is NO MUFFLER :) So I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion on a 4" muffler that still has that GREAT no muffler sound... I'm not really wanting to put one back on... but it's only been a couple of months and already 1 ticket :D

What's the big idea saying that you beat me to the punch. LOL

That sucks. A run in with the Law. Where do you live?

My truck was straight piped for 2and a half years and no problems, now I have stacks on, and still no problem.

Wow. I wish Mr. Law would clamp down on some of the Harley guys who blast around. I've yet to hear a Dodge/Cummins anywhere near as loud as most Harleys under throttle.

I know what your saying, some of them are just to dam loud and very obnoxious, they don't even sound good.

Also the same thing with the ricers out there and there coffee can exhaust tips. There very obnoxious and don't sound good at all.

I don't mind loud as long as it sounds good, but these things just don't sound good at all. Cant beat the beautiful sound of straight piped diesel. :D :D

With some of the stupid stuff people in autos do to guys on bikes when they can hear them I can't imagine what it would be like if they were quiet - Loud pipes save lives - period.

I agree that loud pipes do save lives, but there is a difference in them being loud and sounding good and being loud stupid sounding and obnoxious.

I have no problem with loud bikes that sound good.

I also agree that most people in autos do, do stupid things when people are on bikes, but I have also seen guys on bikes do stupid things to.

Well... . I'm not sure what to do... . :( I think i'll just take my 4" muffler and gut it out a little... has anyone done this?

BTW: Don't be ragging on Harleys... I have one of them too ... Loud is good ... . :D

Been reading up on the codes here. . seems it's illegal to have a straight exhaust... plain and simple... Like i really care! but I figure if I take a little out of my muffler it will sound better. . and it will still look stock... I just can't stand the thought of putting a muffler back on!!!!

Where do you live? In some places, PA for one, if a vehicle is equipped with a turbocharger then it is not required to run a muffler. The logic was that the turbo smooths out the engine pulses and decreases the dB level.

I am not sure if I believe that it works that way but I know of a lot of trucks here without mufflers and they no problems at the yearly inspection.

Mike: I live in VA... . and the code speciffically says straight pipes are illegal :( I will look into that tho! Maybe there is a work around... I have a friend that's a lawyer. . maybe i'll pick his brain! It seems that only Comercial ppl are the ones that get away with running straight pipes!

in TX a turbocharger is considered a muffler.

BUT, there are still noise ordinances... so, just because you have a muffler, you can still be cited for being too loud.

but the bottom line here is that you're getting hassled.

Can't say as I care to see anything or anybody disabled long the side of the road. . . I live on the road, drive by dead or disabled things everyday. Doing this work has learnt me patience & tolerance of all. Otherwise I'd just be a killin myself a frettin. Big change in my attitude. Long ago a less patient me once pushed an old lady through and around the corner in the turn lane at an intersection. She'd sat through the first turn arrow and I wasn't about to wait out another one. Crazy is as crazy does, frankly I was lucky not to be locked up.

Cheers,

LOL Steve, reminds me of a story I heard on the radio about a woman getting a ticket by a police officer. She never said a word while he wrote her up and singed the ticket with no complaint and took off. While the cop was sitting on the side of the road doing a follow-up he looked in the rear view mirror to see the woman going ba!!s to the wall. She rear ended the officer 4 times before she tried to take off but ended up spinning out. Then the cop sideswipped her and pinned her. Not sure what became of the woman but I bet it involved a night in the cage. Kinda makes you chuckle how some people can just snap..... :D

I would suggest the Dynomax Bullet Race Muffler, available in sizes up to 5". They cost under $50 at most Napa stores. . I paid $33. They sound great, just enough to take the edge off of the straight pipe sound, but still loud enough to keep ya smiling. .

Just my $. 02

Well said, don't know how many times some idiot has almost run me over when I was on a bike! Had one guy pull out in front of me when he was coming out of a parking lot, the jerk jumps out of his car as I slide the bike sideways to avoid hitting him and yells "Watch where you're going, cars have right of way over motorcycles!" Scary, Texas let this guy have a drivers license! As far as the sound, thats a personal thing I guess. To me, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, not even my diesel, sounds as good as an open piped v-twin! If you use the logic of sound=power=cool, you've gotta love the open pipes. :D

P. S. -Don't forget, our Diesels are considered obnoxiously noisy and dirty by a good percentage of the population without any mods at all! (Latest models excluded, of course. ) People give me dirty looks and roll up their windows when I pull up next to them at lights.

I've heard this often enough from Harley guys, and on the surface it sounds valid--but is that really the case? In the four years I spent driving emergency vehicles, I don't know how many times I could pull a few feet behind some guy with all the lights going, siren blaring, and throw in the air horns for good measure, only to follow him for two miles until he finally looked in the mirror. Cars just have too much insulation these days, and drivers have too many distractions.

Not to say I don't like the sound of a straightpiped Harley (though it is a bit much, sometimes), but I wouldn't count on the noise doing you any good at all as far as a warning device. I was thinking of getting a bike sometime this year, but here in the old-people capitol of the world, I'm afraid of getting squished--anyone think I could get some train horns mounted?
