Upgrading my head light harness, where can I get plugs?

Hey guys,

For those of you with running board lights, did you mount them directly onto the sheet metal lip on the bottom of the rocker, or did you make a strip of steel to mount them into, then mount that to the lip?

I found a 12 light/wire/connector kit at Pep Boys for $25 and thought about installing this since it is cheap, and if it grows on me I can replace them with LEDs later, if not its only $25 down the hole, rather than buying LEDs which are $10/each for the same size as the ones in the kit.

And did you wire in a relay or just tap into the running light wire?

Thanks!

I mounted mine directly on the running boards, used the lights that matched the lights on the fender and tailgate. Mine are run through a relay, didn't want to take any chances with too much on the switch as some have had in the past.

Thanks!

I do not have running boards yet, so thats why I was curious about mounting them to the cab, the same place as the boards or nerf bars would go. I may just go with a hoop step for now.

How many amp relay did you use and which hot did you use? Thank you!

Evening,

I mounted the lights directly to the running boards. If I remember correctly, there is not enough room on the lip to mount the lights without making some sort of mounting plate. I used the same lights as on the fenders. I also went all LED because of their lower amp draw, longer life, and because they look cool.

Mine are switched seperately so I do not have to have them on during extended idle conditions (fire calls) when I am running all of the emergency lights. If you were to go all LED, I dont think you would have to use a relay, although it is cheap insurance.

I tried to find some LED's in a 1" sealed round style. You know the ones that mount in the rubber grommet so if you kick them they just poke out the back. I had no luck. Too bad because I've got enough room to mount them on my custom boards.

I mounted mine on the lip just like EricBu12 did. I siliconed sealed them on and have had no problem with them. At the same time, I put six red ones across the back, under the tailgate. I wired them all to a plug that plugs into the little 4-connector inline trailer plug under the back end. This way I didn't have to splice into any wiring. I got my LEDs from Mill Supply

I do have one behind the rear tires, the pinch weld wasn't wide enough there so I cut a piece of aluminum the width of the light and bolted it to the pinch weld and mounted the light to it. For a relay just go to Radio Shack and get an automotive relay, i think it was a 25 or 30 amp.

I used a tail light to trigger the relay, only because I already had it apart and was running wire to the battery area for the White Night back up lights .
