2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Running Costs..

I'm doing the "Budget" thing and I'm trying to come up with an amount to budget for repairs and maintenance on my truck. I know that the costs of repairs can vary wildly, but I'd like to know if anyone has come up with a good figure?

Running it

LOTS and LOTS of money to keep the bomb funding up. LOL

Truely very cheap I change the fuel filter every 10K and oil every 3K and not much else.

My truck costs 65 cents/mile for everything, payments, insurance, fuel, tire fund,fluids changes, light maintenance. Anything else is extra.

I have a 94 2500, pretty much stock. I have 160000 on it. I had to do the front pads, an injector pump (cold starting at -20 without heat) and tires (I have over 70000 on the Mich ATX tires) since I bought it at 68000. My fuel gauge hasn't worked for a few years but I have the part. I believe that other than normal maintenance, fuel, oil, tires you should be fairly well off. Any other item would be an exception and is hard to budget for. But you must remember that things on these engines are not cheap, so you need to have a fund set aside. Its cheaper to maintain then to repair. Keep good fuel and oil in it and it will be kind to you.

I roughly budget about $100 a month +- 1-1200 a year. and when I've added up the receipts at the end of a fiscal it's always worked up fairly close. Fuel not included, Figure based on ever 3 years----,,



set of tires and flats $ 800

Brakes Pads/shoes, sometimes extras every 5 years $500

oil changes based on 30k miles/yr $200

fuel filters/belts/fuses/anti freeze/ $200

transmission/dif oils $200

The odd expensive part $500

Wipers/windshield $200

Washes/detail paint $300

little unknowns? $200



This is just ball park but I've been figuring this out for about 20 years.

I bought my truck (see sig) in july 2001.



I've put 30000 miles on it.

I do ALL my own work.

The major things I've done: clutch, input shaft to trans (due to pilot bearing seizing), tires, new drive shaft, replace all fluids but engine with synthetic, KDP, brakes, ball joints and all u-joints. Most of that was because of abuse from the former owner.



I've spent $3855. 45 which is 12c per mile.



That does NOT include fuel, registration or insurance. - only maintenance.

Overall, the Ram has been pretty cheap to run. I've had to replace some things like tires, a few marker lights, shocks, exhaust, batteries and some other small things that are outside of normal PM stuff. Those parts were shot/worn out when I bought the truck a little over 2 years ago. Most of that was in the first year of ownership.



Since then, 2 thermostats, one belt, 1 set of front brake pads, 1 head light switch, a few seals and some metal valve stems. And the rest has been for fun (BOMBing ).



The Ford on the other hand, is the most expensive, worn out POS I have owned. It had been negleted pretty bad, and pretty much sat still for 4yrs before I got it. List is so long in the first 10k miles after I bought it, it'd make you head spin.



I do all my own work and they're paid for.
