Dash gauges and overdrive not working

I have noticed that my 90 D350 is running differently. It isn't bad, but it seems to have lost some umph. I had a problem earlier in the year with the oil light coming on at idle after a long interstate jaunt pulling the race car. After discussing it here, I upped the idle a little and never had a problem again, but it was always in the back of my mind as to WHY I had to change the idle setting. This truck has never had a single mod, and I was debating doing a little bombing (you guys make it awfully tempting), but refuse to until I get some gauges on it so I can tell what I am doing, and to get it running like it should be in stock form first. The truck has less than 100K on it, and most of that was empty. I have heard of worn injector pumps doing this, but I am so unfamiliar with diesels, that I wouldn't begin to know how to check it. I guess if it doesn't have spark plugs and a carb, I am a little lost. If any of you have had problems like I am describing (with the truck, not the ignorance:D ) please let me know.

Thanks,

Jim

Start with checking the basics... .

All turbo connections/hoses

Air filter

Fuel filter

Fuel leaks around injectors, pump, lift pump

Is it smoking more? If so what color, when, what conditions?

Is it any harder starting hot/cold?

Have you bought fuel from an unusual source?

Try to include a few more bits of info, and do a quick check of the other things.

Guys, did I miss some things here????

Bob.

I'll check the things you mentioned.

It does smoke when I start it (combination of black and blue), and when I accelerate (black).

Assuming your filters/hoses are in good shape the black/blue smoke on startup is normal if your timing is a bit retarded... the black on accel. is incomplete burnt fuel. It suggests you need either less fuel at that RPM or you need more boost/air in.

Get back on the other things and we'll go from there.
