Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) running exhaust with resonator only

I'm thinking of removing the muffler and tail pipe and running a short down pipe right off the resonator should this sound good and not have any performance issues?

I had the muffler cutout. Put a piece of 3" pipe in it's place. Left the resonator. Sounds good, not too loud. Maybe a 50 degree drop in EGT.

It will work fine. Straight pipe with only the resonator will be louder without some of the drone associated with only the straight pipe.



Are you leaving the tailpipe off ? Using a short down pipe off the resonator,or just a turn down will be really noisy in the cab,I did it and it came right back off again. Take it for a drive after dropping the muffler and tailpipe and you'll see what I mean.



Just make a pipe to bypass the muffler,and keep the tailpipe on,or at least some kind of pipe out from under the truck,like in front of the rear wheels. It will be much more bearable in the cab.

If I'm using a turn down off the resonator, would it be a four inch pipe that was slightly expanded on the end to fit over the resonator? I'm assuming the resonator is four inches in width on the distal end where it would normally attach to the muffler.

Yor turn down needs to be 4" ID to slip over the resonator outlet.



I removed my muffler & tailpipe without ruining the muffler and had the exhaust shop make the elimination pipe using my 4"-3" adapter and rehang the tailpipe. The truck was too noisy in the cab for me with the exhaust outlet under the truck.

I had my muffler removed and a short straight pipe installed from the resignator to the stock tailpipe. Truck sounds good and not really all that noticable in the cab with windows up.



I got about a 150 degree drop in EGT and maybe . 3 MPG. I am very happy with this and do not plan to change the exhaust system further. Unless the bonb bug bites too often.

Yes, just remove the muffler and replace with straight pipe ( I don't think anyone could stand a turn down under the bed... would probably sound like a 1000 kettle drums)

I'm running res only and get drone. Not bad, but it's right there at 2k rpm. Just a little more or less R's and it goes away.



It's not bad, or I would have tried to fix it (clamp angle iron onto exhaust) already. Just wanted to note that it does exist on a Quad.

Before I changed my exhaust, I checked the SPL and it was 100db at idle.

After putting on the Genos muffler eliminator kit I measured the SPL at 112db.

Measurements were done with the truck in the same location, with the meter in the same location, about 2in from the side of the tailpipe at an angle towards the outlet.

A 10dB increase is perceived as as "double" the volume.

Thanks for posting your info on noise levels. I certainly knew the truck was louder ( but a "good" loud of course) but not perceived as twice as loud. I suppose the noise cops don't care how good it sounds.
