Hi Guys,

I was heading back from Wisconsin this weekend and the valve stem extension on the inside dual came loose and ripped the valve stem out -- I'm guessing the tech at the tire store didn't get it on very tight when they rotated them last week. Wouldn't you know, I didn't have my spare with me, so I pulled the flat off and reinstalled the remaining tire in the outside position. No problems dirving home, but I did go 350 miles like that.

My question is, is this a safe thing to have done? Is it possible to damage something doing this? I was thinking it might be a problem because of the leverage of having just a single tire on there.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Dave

Question answered!

It wont hurt anything as long as you didnt have a large load on the truck. As long as you were just driving it will be fine.

i have seen a few people over the years who take one tire off for the winter to get better traction. they don't carry any major loads and everything is fine.

That's good to know, guys, thanks for the repsonses. I've been tempted to run on one in the winter as well -- not only for the traction reasons, but with the tires I have, I have to air them down in the back to 25lbs to get them to wear better -- and that's still a bit overinflated for running empty. I guess the tires I have are very stiff! If I just had one tire on, then I could get better wear.

Thanks again,

Dave

Whenever you run extensions on the dually, it is recommended to use solid steel threaded valve stems, that way you won't experience pull out of the stems.
