Hey You Guys I Am New Here, So Well Here Goes. I Have A 3rd Gen Truck And My Father Has A 1st Gen Truck. The Question Pertains To His. I Told Him How To Tweek The Pump On His Truck So In His Words Would Not Run Like A Dog Anymore. Well He Is Very Happy Now Says It Is Like A New Truck Hell It Only Has About 50,000 On The Clock. Anyway This Thing Runs Great Up To 70 Mph. Then When It Gets To About 72 He Says It Falls Right On Its Face. I Am Guessing It Is Either De-fueling Or Running Out Of Fuel. Has Anyone Here Have Any Ideas About This Problem. I Might Have Left Out Some Info About What We Did But Basically Pump Idle And Governor Adjusting Is About The Jist Of It. Any Help Would Be Great.

Thanks You Guys I Hope To Update My Profile And Log On Here More Often.

two things to check right away. The lift pump pressure and the fuel filter.

You didn't say if it's a early or late first gen. That would help.

Don, this sounds like an unfixable problem. Hmmm, 50k miles you say? Tell you what. I'll take it off his hands for $1500... . ok, you drive a hard bargain. I'll go $1600.

(sorry, I couldn't resist :-laf)

Is the truck an automatic? What year is it? Does it have overdrive? These are things we need to know! ;) If it's an auto, no OD, it's most likely defueling.

heck ,, I would take a chance on it for maybe $2000,, but most likely it sounds llike maybe a filter problem , yes it would help if we knew if it was early or late first gen,,,,,,

It Is A Late 93 Made In August, Stick 2 Wheel Drive And He Dont Want To Part With It, Doesnt Like The Idea Of Spending Fiftey Thousand Plus On A Work Truck When This One Is Almost New And The Way He Is Going It Will Last Him A Life Time.

Thanks But Well I Will Sell It To Any Of You For Just 1 Dollar Over What You Offer Evertytime So A Impossible Number.

Well hell, my 89 doesnt start to defuel until about 85-90mph. Maybe he has 4. 11 gears? And my offer is $2200 firm, thats alot of money for an old beat up truck yah know?

Do not listen to these guys they are all cheapskates and are trying to steal this nice, although problematic, truck!!! I'll give you $2300. ;)

You Know I Just Wanted Some Help With This Problem It Is Not Even My Truck, It Just Sits There 11 Months Out Of The Year And Never Goes Anywhere. I Guess When You Have A 200,000 Dollar Truck You Drive All The Time With A Cat Yeah A Real Motor I Guess You Dont Need To Drive The Little Boy Stuff With A Dinky Motor In It. If You Ask Me Any Of You Guys Own Something That Old Your Dirt Poor Or Just Cheap I Say This Cause I Know That My Old Man Is Cheap. So If You Dont Want To Give Me Any Advice On This Outdated Technology Then I Guess I Overated This Web Site And This Registry. Sorry To Have Wasted My Time But I Guess I Can Just Put The Pump Back To Stock And It Will Be Nicer Than Any Of The Junk You Guys Might Have From The First Gen.

Oh Yeah One More Thing Anybody Want To Hook To My 2004 1100 Hp Ram I Will Gladly Take Any Oncommers That Might Be Interested But Hey Get Your Lemons Fixed First And Put It On A Trailer Cause I Would Pull You Across This Country From Coast To Coast. Now I Dont Like To Brag And Really Dont Care That Much I Am In This For The Love Of The Hobby And The Fun That It Brings But I Guess The Diesel Community Is All Jerks. I Just Have To Stick To My Gasoline Hotrods Then, They Sound Cooler Anyway.

Thanks For Nothin You Guys,

Don Ryan

I am rather new to the diesel world myself (so, I can't really help on the 1st gen problem) but, what the hell? I think that a few guys were just joking around and, in a way that you may have misunderstood, been complimenting the your father's truck. And, on a side note . . . I am guessing that an 1100hp truck costs a good bit more than most on this board.

Don Ryan:

Sorry if we came off as not caring about the problem you posted about. If the truck has 411 gears in it that may be the top end on this truck with the stock govenor spring still in it. The stock spring will defuel at about 2700 rpm. you can order a "366" spring from Schieds Diesel Service which will take the rpm up to 3200 which will give you more top end. At the mileage you said the truck is at I would not think that the stock diaphram lift pump has gone South yet but it is possible, a good upgrade for that problem is a piston lift pump which will put out 16 psi. There are more performance gains available by grinding the fuel cone, this will give you more fuel on the big end according to the profile you grind in it. Hope this will be of some help.

I gave you what help I could, with the lack of information you gave. I'm usually a wise guy, but try to help when I can. And you wanna be like that? Go over to DTR, lotsa guys with your attitude over there. :p

Ptoombs I Dont Have An Attitude. I Am A 25 Year Old Punk Who Has Been To War 3 Times Has Two Kids And Works Twice As Hard As Most Even More So Since I Have Left The Army.

I Have Little Or No Time For Someone Who Is Going To Bust My Chops For Thier Own Personal Laughs. Call Me Old Fashioned But I Like To Help Others Not Poke Fun At Them Because They Dont Know. The Life I Just Left Well When Someone Does Not Know They Die. I Knew Many Of Them That Did. Awade And Tworline Thank You For Some Of Your Time. The Truck Has Stock 3. 55's In It I Mean The Whole Thing Is Factory Withe The Exception Of The Muffler ( It Actually Rotted Out From Sitting For So Long) But I Thought That Maybe The Governor Spring Was What Was Causing This Thing From Seeing Some More Potential. I Was Just Not Sure And Did Not Want To Tell Him To Get One And That Not Be The Problem. I Also Want To Say Thanks For Telling Me Where To Get One. As Far As My Truck Being A Money Pit, Well You Dont Want To Know But I Had Second And Even For A Little While A Third Job As Well As Side Work On Cars And Trucks To Pay For It. So Mamma Can Not Yell At Me I Earned It. I Will Let Him Know That He Might Want To Go Ahead And Get That Governor Spring. Thanks Again.

Don Ryan

Well Don, sometimes we all get a little heated up over this stupid box with pictures and stuff. Sorry if I got a little snotty, once in a while we all gotta step back and take a few deep breaths before we start typing again.

With a stick and 3. 55's you should be able to hit about 90 no problem. Change the fuel filter, and if that doesn't help, check fuel pressure. A governor spring will help, but I think you have a lack of fuel.

Don,

Wait a second. Before you go throwing money at it, check the things I said before.

Lift pump pressure can be checked using an old oil pressure guage at the bleed hole. (the one you use to bleed the system after a filter change)

But before doing that, just change the filter. It most likely needs it anyway.

Now one thing to think about. If it has been sitting a loooong time, the tank may have algie growing in there and plugging up the sock. Give it an overdose of diesel treatment. (like 3 times recommended)

If it never did this before turning it up, it sounds like the filter to me.

Please don't let these guys give you a bad impression of this site. There are some good people here and some have active sense of humors and get carried away.

try the basics first. Check the pinned ares on the top of this forum. You may find what you are looking for.

Thank you for your service to our country Don.

Very well said! The guys (including myself) were only joking around and were complementing your father's truck in a roundabout way. I hope the others have given you some advice you can use. Everyone loves a sweet ole' 12 valver;) (seriously)

All right, now that we have determined some of the boys were just kidding lets just try to help the man out and forget th elittle misunderstanding.

Don, you have our attention and apologies. Please continue to ask any questions you need answered. :)

As for the JOKERS, it looks like it may be time to start handing out the negative HP cards.

Don Ryan,

You'll get a few hundred rpm more by simply adjusting the gov stop screw. That will get him a few more MPH... maybe enough to satisfy him.

I can get just about to 100 mph and that's what I did in lieu of the different gov spring.

As far as being cheap cuz I drive a first gen... well you are pretty accurate there. I don't drive junkers, but I spend my $$ elsewhere... like on a boat and for my retirement, but that's a personal choice.

I spent 7 years in the US army in the 70s, and I work as hard as anyone, so shove that attitude and keep it there... . we don't need that here.

EDIT: I know I just volunteered for some negative HP points... but from my signature it's clear I don't have much to lose... ... .
