I apologize for my previous post, which was a little out of line. Don, you have the worlds best resource for your truck right here at your finger tips. More knowlegde of that motor and that truck are here than any mechanic shop or school, in my opinion. They are also some of the nicest and most helpful guys I've ever talked to, and where they have a sense of humor, I think they'll still be more than willing to help. To clarify, when they were talking about taking that truck off your hands, they were basically saying that, like most of us on here, they'd kill to have one of these old 1st gen beauties that actually under 100k miles. Your dad has a real diamond there, and with a little more understanding of our tounge-in-cheek responses on here, you'll be able to get it purring like a kitten at any rpm.

Ok Ok You Guys I Guess I Flew Off The Handle Myself Here. Like I Said I Am New To This Whole Diesel Forum And Well I Guess I Did Not Differ Joke From Well Insult. I Am Guilty Of The Same. I Did Not Mean To Call Anyone Cheap Or Poor. That Was Out Of Spite And Anger So That Is Just As Rude Of Me And Makes Me No Better Than Anyone Else That Would Talk That Way. Yes My Old Mans Truck Is A Nice One. My Truck Is Only A Couple Of Years Old And Has Almost As Many Miles As His. So I Know Where He Is Coming From. I Also Know Some Guys With Some Of These 1st Gen Trucks With Loads Of Miles. I Hope My Truck Lasts As Long As Your Guys Trucks Do. So Yeah Hopefully We Shall Work On That Governor Screw, And Maybe A Spring And See What Happens. Thanks For All Of Your Help You Guys. I Think I Would Fit In Just Fine Here On This Website.

Yea all the gens have thir quirks and need different things to make them last a lot of miles.....

of course the biggest key is leaving them stock...

But I guess that ain't happening much around here. :-laf:-laf so we all need to learn the practical limits based on what kind of duty is demamnded of these beasts.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned checking the throttle rod for slack. Even with low miles, it can still have some slop in it. Loosen the locknuts and turn the center to tighten it up (one end is right hand threads, the other end LH, so it works like a turnbuckle. ). When all the slack is taken out, and the throttle lever on the pump moves, back it off til you have just a hair's slack in the rod. Tighten the nuts and that is out of the way.

The lift pump could well have packed up and gone south- it sits for 11mo of the year, and sitting is harder than overworking it. The diaphragm could well be dry rotted.

Also, with the ultra-low mileage, how fresh is the fuel?

Check timing.

Adjust valves, though that normally has a bigger effect on noise, power, and MPG than top end RPM.

I admit it, I am cheap, and that is one reason I own a 1stGen. BUT, it is also 100% mechanical, and I have jury rigged up something on the side of the highway at midnight to get me home more than once. Try doing that with any electronic engine, gas or diesel. It gets me where I need to go on less fuel than the newer ones, easier to work on, etc, etc. Also, my vehicle is done depreciating- if I keep it (93) in its current condition, the value will actually start to go UP in a few years.

Also, Don, thanks for putting your butt on the line to protect ours.

Daniel
