What men think when looking through a rifle scope...

Rain-Soft Watertreatment System-Good/Bad

Just had a pretty good scare. I took my dogs out to the prarie for a little run, they do get tired of being cooped up in the backyard. I decided to take them to a different area than usual and ended up in a hilly area of prarie. They ran for about 45 minutes and then took off over a distant hill about a half a mile away.

I then heard a yip,it didn't sound like my dogs,so I figured it might be a ranchers dogs out there and whistled my dogs in. My old big mutt came over the horizon, loping along. And a minute later here comes my young Pitbull, with something in his mouth. At first at that distance,I thought it was a rabbit. As he came closer I thought it might be a coyote. He would stop and shake it and blood would fly! Then as he got closer I could not believe my eyes!It was a full grown BADGER! And it was still alive! He had it by the throat and everytime it would struggle he would stop and shake it. Then it dawned on me he was bringing it back to give to ME!Well,I didn't bring my pistol or rifle with me(You never have them when you need them),so I am yelling "DROP IT" and slowly moving in a retreat toward the pickup. He drops it finally within 10' of me,the badger ambles in the other direction and Bullwinkle jumps in the pickup!Bullwinkle has gotten bit on the jowels and throat(small punture wounds,no rips),but the badger I think was mortally wounded. Bullwinkle has had his shots just last year, and we still have some pain pills and antibiotics left from when the old dog had surgery.

I have had my excitment for today. I have only seen one other dog in my life take on a badger. It was a Wolfhound/Redbone mix used for lion and bear hunting. I had no idea this pup was that powerful. That badger had to weight 40-50lbs and he was shaking him like a ragdoll... ... ...

Pitbulls have one of the strongest jaw muscles of any dog. Surprising what they can do, especially when their jaw locks (good luck opening it)

I've often heard that NO dog can beat a pit bull in a fight. The breed has a natural trait that just won't allow them to give up. This doesn't mean they are naturally fighters, that's something humans teach them to do. I had a pit once, it was a very gentle dog, but get it in a game of tug of war and it always won. Badger has to be the stinkyest animal I've ever encountered, did the smell come off on your dog?

Nope

No he didn't stink any worse than he always does. Brought him home and washed him up to check him out further. He had blood from one end to the other! He is a big ole puppy and is gentle with us. Has had the neighbor kid in the backyard playing with him,no problems. He does like to lick him though, after today I am hoping it is not just a taste before eating him... ... .

I wouldn't worry to much about your Pit. Remember, they have a great deal of terrier in them. Factor in the Bulldog, and possible a dash of (hound from the southern states) and I'd be surprised if your dog didn't take on that badger. In Florida, Pits' are used for wild boar. Many times the boar wins, but the Pits' don't quite!

I have owned 2 Bullterriers( which are included in with the Pit bull Group, along with the English Staffs, and American Staffs. ) and I can tell you these dogs are in a league of their own.

Don't put to much stock in the old saying" It's all in how you raise a dog". Bloodline has a great deal to do with how a dog behaves when he gets grown. Also I believe a puppy will learn more in their first 8 weeks about social behavior from his mother and siblings, than it will in the next 8 monthes from you. I always check a dogs bloodline, and if his mother and siblings were permitted to be aggressive around each other or around people.

I had about a half dozon boxers in the past. One female was particularly good at catching possums and cats. We didn't have badgers so I don't know how she could do them in or not. She also used to catch birds. Now that was one fast dog!
