Just had a pretty good scare. I took my dogs out to the prarie for a little run, they do get tired of being cooped up in the backyard. I decided to take them to a different area than usual and ended up in a hilly area of prarie. They ran for about 45 minutes and then took off over a distant hill about a half a mile away.
I then heard a yip,it didn't sound like my dogs,so I figured it might be a ranchers dogs out there and whistled my dogs in. My old big mutt came over the horizon, loping along. And a minute later here comes my young Pitbull, with something in his mouth. At first at that distance,I thought it was a rabbit. As he came closer I thought it might be a coyote. He would stop and shake it and blood would fly! Then as he got closer I could not believe my eyes!It was a full grown BADGER! And it was still alive! He had it by the throat and everytime it would struggle he would stop and shake it. Then it dawned on me he was bringing it back to give to ME!Well,I didn't bring my pistol or rifle with me(You never have them when you need them),so I am yelling "DROP IT" and slowly moving in a retreat toward the pickup. He drops it finally within 10' of me,the badger ambles in the other direction and Bullwinkle jumps in the pickup!Bullwinkle has gotten bit on the jowels and throat(small punture wounds,no rips),but the badger I think was mortally wounded. Bullwinkle has had his shots just last year, and we still have some pain pills and antibiotics left from when the old dog had surgery.
I have had my excitment for today. I have only seen one other dog in my life take on a badger. It was a Wolfhound/Redbone mix used for lion and bear hunting.
I had no idea this pup was that powerful. That badger had to weight 40-50lbs and he was shaking him like a ragdoll... ... ...
