Besides the obvious reasons like sucking a bird or a small rock into the turbo, what other affects will running without an intake hose for a long period of time do to a turbo. . wear out bearings and seals prematurely?Should there be "some" back pressure from an airfilter on that side of the turbo?

Question please :)

Why would you want to run without the intake hose  Are you indicating that you will mount the filter directly to the turbo

Curosity is run amuck with me :)

I was gonna say all the dust and road crap would just grind the tubo innards and result in premature failure, I mean the turbo whine might be cool for a bit, but is it worth trashing the turbo-unless you're looking for an upgrade, but... ... I'll shut up. . :)

Forget about the turbo

If the question is about running with a open turbo as in no filter or hose. The only real expense to consider would be a new engine after a few miles (or at least rings).

If considering doing it for a dyno run or down the quarter, that's different. I might try it in a closed enviroment on the dyno, and I've made a lot of passes down the track with no filter with a gasser. But don't think I'd do it with either of our trucks. The risk/reward ratio ain't good.

It is unlikely that the turbo itself would be damaged. The compressor clearances would prevent any wear to the wheel. The bearing in the middle it flooded with oil so it would be difficult for airborn dirt to get to it. BUT, the engine is another matter. I saw a Cummins man show how much abrasive dirt will ruin a Diesel engine. It would lay in the palm of your hand.
